Title: Elements, Mixtures and Compounds

1
Elements, Mixtures and Compounds
2
Element
  • Substance that cant be broken down into another
    substance
  • 89 Natural Elements
  • 20 Man Made Elements
  • 109 Total Elements

3
Element (cont.)
  • Periodic Table
  • Elements are listed on chart in order of
    their characteristics
  • Chemical Symbol
  • 1 or 2 letters that stand for an element
  • Usually, but not always an abbreviation of the
    elements name

4
Examples of Chemical Symbols
  • Oxygen O
  • Helium He
  • Gold Au
  • Iron - Fe

5
Mixture
  • Combination of 2 or more substances in which the
    substances keep their own properties
  • Not combined chemically
  • Doesnt have a definite amount of each ingredient

6
Mixture (cont.)
  • Two types
  • Homogenous mixture that is the same throughout
    (Examples Milk, Kool-Aid, pudding)
  • Heterogeneous mixture that is not the same
throughout (Examples raisin bran, choc. chip
    cookie dough)

7
Compound
  • 2 or more elements that have been chemically
    combined
  • Has new properties that are diff. from the
properties of the elements its made of (new
    substance)
  • Can be broken down by chemical means
  • Has a definite amount of each element

8
Molecule
  • Smallest part of a compound (cannot be any
smaller unless it is broken apart into separate
    elements)

9
Chemical Formula
  • Used to show what elements and how many make up a
    compound
  • NaCl (sodium chloride) H2O (water)
  • Sodium Chlorine 2 Hydrogens
    Oxygen

10
Game
  • Split into groups of four
  • With a piece of paper and a marker make four
    signs (Mixture, Compound, Heterogeneous,
    Homogeneous)
  • Sit quietly and wait for next direction

11
Choices
  • Element
  • Compound
  • Homogenous Mixture
  • Heterogeneous Mixture
