13
Teaching activity proposed in connection with
the ADHD project (as agreed during the project
meeting in Treviso in April 2005)
  • Aim
  • Reducing the difficulties deriving from attention
deficit disorder both in connection with AD/HD
symptoms and with adult learning in difficult
    situation of penitentiary system
  • Class target
  • The present learning situation involves a
    heterogeneous level group of students/inmates
featuring from the absolute beginners to the
    pre-intermediate.
  • On 5 students 2 are absolute beginners, 2 false
    beginners and a pre-intermediate.

14
Teaching activity proposed
  • Subject involved English
  • Preparatory work to be developed by each
partner country according to its own methodology
  • Task/test submitted to the 5 ss of the class
  • reading and comprehension of an English newspaper
    article
  • summarizing , with reduction of the article to
1/3 of its length with the use of a Personal
Computer , to be developed without paraphrasing
, due to the impossibility of language
reprocessing skills on the part of the absolute
    beginners
  • Time allowed 1 hour

15
Results 1
  • Good results for pre-intermediate students
  • Difficulties in the ability to summarize the
English article partly due to lack of competence
in the English language on the part of the
beginners and in particular for one student with
    attention problems submitted to medical
    treatment
  • Decision to test the above student with an
activity in Italian arranged as follows

16
Activity in Italian
  • Reading and comprehension of some documents
  • Underlining the most important information
  • Brainstorming about any idea connected to the
    topic
  • Selecting the most relevant aspects detected
  • Developing an outline for the production of a
    short essay
  • Counterchecking of the presence of all the points
    corresponding to the outline

17
Results 2
  • Difficulties in underlining the key points
  • Difficulties in the use of and understanding the
    submitted documents
  • Lack of logical sequence in organising the ideas

18
Comments
  • To what extent does the tech aids help the
students to overcome the difficulties of
    concentration/attention deficit?
  • The simple use of the PC as a mechanical
instrument can help the students to concentrate
on the submitted task and obtain acceptable
results ( where low level competences are
    requested).
  • When higher competences (such as cohesion,
coherence, synthesis, etc.) are requested, we
think that the t.a. cannot produce adequate
results in a short time. However ,our opinion is
that through a repeated use of strictly guided
teaching activity , also supported by a mind
mapping software programme , some positive
results will ensue in the long run .

19
Overall considerations about the partecipation of
the Italian group in the Grundtvig 2 project
  • ?Achieved results
  • Project group awareness of the teaching in
difficult contexts related to students with
problems of concentration/attention due to mental
    uneasiness, age and disadvantaged learning
    conditions
  • Transfer of the results of the experimental work
carried out in compliance with the ADHD project
goals to the SIRIO staff involved in adult
    education
  • Involvement of the prison director and his staff
  • Better organisation regarding teaching and better
working conditions in the prison unit
  • Involvement of the educational/social workers and
psychologists appointed by the Ministry of
Justice for the treatment of the inmates and
their cooperation with the teachers need to cope
    with the classroom management
  • Improvement of the school premises through the
forthcoming construction of a building extension
to be used as classrooms for the Palladio course
of land-surveyors, sponsored by the Treviso
association of the chartered surveyors ,
    Treviso province and our school

20
Overall considerations about the experience of
the Palladio school in the European programmes
Leonardo da Vinci and Socrates
  • Year 2004 Leonardo da Vinci project Spring
  • (DK, IE, IS, NO, IT)
  • ? acquaintance with the different European
    contexts of prison education
  • ? comparison among different prison education
    systems through teachers exchange

21
Overall considerations about the experience of
the Palladio school in the European programmes
Leonardo da Vinci and Socrates
  • Year 2005
  • ?entrance in the Grundtvig2 partnership
  • ?initial approach to the ADHD problems
  • ?investigation of issues and case studies related
    to the ADHD syndrome
  • ?project meetings for the exchange of the
    partners experiences
  • ?illustration of the project, of its aims and its
    relevance
  • ?dissemination to all the actors involved in
    both institutions (school and penitentiary)

22
Overall considerations about the experience of
the Palladio school in the European programmes
Leonardo da Vinci and Socrates
  • Year 2006
  • ?operational steps to implement the teaching
methodologies identified as suitable to overcome
the learning problems potentially related to
    ADHD symptoms
  • ?active participation and joint action of all the
actors involved in the school and penitentiary
    institutions
  • ?organisational developments in all aspects of
the school course in prison as follows

23
Overall considerations about the partecipation of
the Italian group in the Grundtvig 2 project
  • For the first time we have obtained 4-5 computers
( until last year the classroom was the same room
used for family meetings and there were no
    teaching aids)
  • For the first time we have obtained to use a
television set for watching videotapes , such
activity has been appreciated by the students
  • In the classroom there has been authorization for
use of drawing tools, (compasses and set of
squares) essential for the technical subjects
  • More involvement of the prison police and inmates
and cooperative attitude towards the course
    (i.e. prompt roll calling)
  • At the moment no students among the inmates
attending the course have shown clear adhd
symptoms but maybe similar ones, observed in one
case, have been dealt with by the teacher with
    more attentive methodology

24
Expected results through the Grundtvig 2 project
  • For the next future
  • We hope there will be
  • a joint action between the teachers and the
psychologist in charge of the inmates , in order
to identify an early diagnosis of adhd cases
and find appropriate educational routes to
    overcome learning problems
  • a synergy among all the people involved
(teachers, doctors, educational workers, etc) not
only to find out suitable medical treatments but
also to explore new educational methodologies to
    achieve positive results
  • the construction of new classrooms and labs in
    order to
  • -improve the teaching /learning context
  • -make the inmates realize that the learning
process is useful to revise the plans of their
future lives under a new perspective, in view of
    their rehabilitation and re-introduction into
the labour market with improved qualifications
    and positive ambitions
  • -promote their active citizenship

25
Expected results through the Grundtvig 2
project
  • The European dimension of our experiences has
greatly widened our horizons and knowledge of
different and often better situations of European
    prison education.
  • We hope there will be other future opportunities
for further comparisons and exchanges with school
    and prison institutions in Europe
