Abstract
  • Practicum students practice teaching skills 8
hours a week for 12 weeks in a classroom setting.
  • One day a week, students participate in a small
group discussion about their practicum classroom
    experience.

3
Abstract
  • I have observed that group discussion are useful
    for disseminating information, answering student
questions, and time for students to voice joys
    and difficulties.
  • I would like group discussions to enhance
teaching practice by having students use shared
teaching strategies in their own teaching.
  • This project is an endeavor to gather information
on how much practicum students actually use
group discussions to enhance their own teaching.

QIC-Decide Model
5
Question
  • Area Practicum Student Teaching Practice
  • Who to involve Practicum instructor and 8-12
practicum students in instructors small group
  • Expectations I would like group discussions to
enhance teaching practice by having students use
shared teaching strategies in their own teaching.

6
Question
  • What percent of teaching strategies shared in
group discussions are used by group members in
    teaching practice?

7
Information
  • Consequences are low-moderate
  • Decisions can be changed easily
  • Effects of using shared teaching strategies could
aid current experience and future professional
    growth
  • Affects few people (8-12 people)
  • Very few resources needed to implement

8
Information
  • Amount /type of data needed This project
requires low rigor data. Few sources of data are
needed with some objectivity, technical adequacy,
    and directness.

9
Information
  • I will collect a list of teaching strategies
    students share in group discussions.
  • Student reflections, lesson plans, and instructor
observations will document whether a student is
    implementing shared teaching strategies. This
information will be gathered in a checklist
    format.
  • Data will be collected for 4 weeks.

Decide
  • Interpret
  • Some students may look as though they did not
utilize the strategies shared in group (as with
Mary) but when taking a closer look we see Mary
shared 7 strategies compared with the 2 or 3
    strategies shared by other students.
  • All students implemented 40 or fewer strategies.

17
Decide
  • Decision statement
  • The question was What percent of teaching
strategies shared in group discussions are used
by group members in teaching practice.
  • The answer is 75 of the shared strategies are
    used at least once.

18
Decide
  • Decision statement
  • I know this because we collected the number of
strategies shared in group and the number of
times that strategy was used by practicum
    students.
  • The data reflected the following characteristics
there was a significant difference between the
group as a whole and the individual students.
(75 vs. -40) Over half of the students used
25-30 of the strategies in their teaching.

19
Decide
  • Decision statement
  • Differences in personal development, classroom
placement, and type of strategy seem to play a
part in the reason behind limited student
implementation. I did expect more student to use
    shared strategies.

20
Decide
  • Next Step
  • Share results with individual students.
  • Run the same procedure for another 4 weeks.
  • Does the type of strategy shared make a
    difference in implementation? Classroom
    management vs. content area?
