Magna Carta 1215
  • Magna Carta is Latin for 'Great Charter'. It was
    negotiated in an attempt to forestall civil war
    over the heavy tax burden that John was imposing
    on his barons.
  • Nobles get rights for the first time and the king
    loses some power over them.

  • British legislature made up of nobles whose job
    was to create laws and oversee the Monarchs
    decisions.
  • Represents the King delegating power to an
    independent legislature of nobles.

    monarch.
  • Gave the Parliament the ability to establish

English Bill of Rights 1689
  • Put restrictions on the monarch.
  • Stated basic rights of citizens.
  • Freedom of speech, right to fair trial, no cruel
    or unusual punishment.
  • Served as basis for the American Bill of Rights.
