Magna Carta 1215

• Magna Carta is Latin for 'Great Charter'. It was
  negotiated in an attempt to forestall civil war
  over the heavy tax burden that John was imposing
  on his barons.
• Nobles get rights for the first time and the king
  loses some power over them.

Parliament 1295

• British legislature made up of nobles whose job
  was to create laws and oversee the Monarchs
  decisions.
• Represents the King delegating power to an
  independent legislature of nobles.

House of Burgesses 1619

• First representative democracy in the American
  colonies.
• Legislative body of Virginia.
• Land owning white men could only vote.

Mayflower Compact 1620

• First direct democracy in the American Colonies.
• Created by the first Puritans in North America
  who landed on Plymouth Rock Massachussetts.

Fundemental Ordersof Connecticut1639

• First modern constitution in the colonies.
• Provided that all free men had voting rights.
• Used secret ballot system.
• Stated powers of the government.
• Limited powers of the government.

Glorious Revolution 1688

• Parliament becomes more powerful than the
  monarch.
• Gave the Parliament the ability to establish
  English Bill of Rights.

English Bill of Rights 1689

• Put restrictions on the monarch.
• Stated basic rights of citizens.
• Freedom of speech, right to fair trial, no cruel
  or unusual punishment.
• Served as basis for the American Bill of Rights.

Social Contract Theory 1690

• Stated that the purpose of govt was to protect
  citizens and if the govt did not protect
  citizens, then the people had the right to
  overthrow the govt.
• Created by John Locke.
• Used as basis for Declaration of Independence.
