  • IDZs to get tax incentive boost?
  • ftw, 17th August.
  • After the government noted poor levels of
    investment in
  • the country's four industrial development zones
    (IDZs) - at
  • Coega, East London, Johannesburg and Richards Bay
    -
  • deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said that
    a
  • review of the incentive packages is now needed.
  • This followed the treasury turning down the
    proposal by
  • the department of trade and industry earlier this
    year that
  • special tax incentives should be introduced for
    IDZs -
  • brining them into line with tax-favored IDZs in
    other parts
  • PE runway extension awaits approval of
  • funds
  • ftw, 2nd September
  • Plans have been drawn up and preliminary costing
  • completed for the lengthening of the main runway
    at Port
  • Elizabeth airport. This will enable larger
    aircraft to handle
  • the types of passenger and freight services which
    the
  • region now needs, says Transport Minister Jeff
    Radebe.
  • The Coega development has seen an increasing
    number
  • of businessmen and growing volumes of cargo
    heading for
  • South Africas newest port. Then there is the
    matter of the
  • 2010 Soccer World Cup, when passengers and
    freight will
  • want to fly direct from overseas to Port
    Elizabeth. It is all
  • going to happen, says Radebe.
  • He says the number of arriving and departing
    passengers
  • moving through the airport had increased
    dramatically

  • Customs wont enforce proof of delivery
  • clause
  • ftw, 2nd September
  • There's been further confirmation that proof of
    final
  • delivery of exports for VAT purposes is on
    hold. This
  • follows a reader query regarding a recent FTW
    article
  • quoting the SA Association of Freight Forwarders
    (Saaff)
  • on the subject. Although a demand for proof of
    delivery is
  • still part of the legislative content of the
    recently-
  • promulgated VAT practice note 30, its is not
    being
  • enforced until this legislation can be
    appropriately
  • changed, according to Brian Olwage, Saaff
    director for
  • Customs. There were loud wails from the freight
  • forwarding and export industries when the new
    rules were
  • announced - with the sheer impossibility of
    getting proof of
  • delivery (particularly from African countries)
    being
  • explained to Customs. They have agreed it is
    impossible,
  • said Olwage, But it is in the legislation, and
    will remain
  • To be noted
  • SANRAL is going ahead with plans to develop a
toll road through the Transkei following an
earlier rejection of such plans. The proposed N2
Wild coast toll highway will run between the
Gonubie Interchange in the Eastern Cape and the
    Isipingo Interchange in KZN.
  • From September 16th, no solid wood packaging
material will be allowed into the US unless it
has been heat treated or fumigated with methyl
    bromide.
  • The EACU is set to become a common market next
year, Kenyas regional minister John Koech, has
said. EAC members are confident the plan is on
course, dismissing claims that member states
would hold them back. The IMF has expressed fear
that Kenya would lose US113.3-million in duty
    revenue under the scheme.
