What are the courses like?In your first term,
you will explore all 3 disciplines. You can
confirm or change your discipline, or combine all
three.You are encouraged to gain practical
experience, and can go on exchange to Italy,
Japan, Romania, India, and maybe Germany.You
will learn about setting up business, getting
employment, given career guidance.You will
regularly exhibit your work, attend VIP private
views and engage with the public.Above all, we
enjoy ourselves.

How will you be taught?Working in our busy
open-plan studios, you will be looked after by a
personal tutor and a project tutor for regular
one-to-one and group tutorials.We set you a
real-life practical project every 6 weeks, and
we encourage you to work with other departments
and outside subcontractors.A series of Design
Culture assignments give you a deeper
understanding of design and help you develop you
own identity.

What will we teach you?You will gain hands-on
skills in our range of workshops, balanced with
theoretical knowledge.You can get to know about
materials such as wood, metal, ceramics and
plastics.We will help you understand how to
process, manufacture and construct with these
materials.You can develop you CAD/CAM skills
and explore our digital prototyping labs.Our
aim is to make you more employable.

Where will you work? Your studios are in the
brand new Levinsky Building, complete with it own
exhibition spaces, sharing with the whole Faculty
of Arts in an exciting, creative environment in
the heart of the city campus. You can work with
other faculties in the university, such as the
Business School, and a wide range of well
equipped workshops including those of the Faculty
of Technology.

Should you be a Designer Maker?If you like
exploring ideas and creating real objects, then
the Designer Maker course may suit you.We teach
you about materials so that you can explore how
they behave, and about processes so you know how
to get things made in small batches.We
encourage you to develop your thinking, discover
your strengths so that you can develop your own
identity.We help you setting up a business or
to join a postgraduate course such as teacher
training when you finish.

Jo Lane and Clare Lovett set up a workshop
together in Surrey.

on cartoons. He has started a MA at The Royal
College of Art in 09.

James OtterAfter a successful degree show, New
Designers and winning a number of competitions,
James has taken one of his 3rd year degree
projects, a wooden surf board, off to Bali for
the summer, then it is back to continue his
business as a designer maker of fine

Mike Lindsey Mike exploited the CNC router to
develop his interest in furniture and wood. He
is interested in the creative applications of new
technology including a variety of CNC, laser
cutting and Rapid Prototyping equipment.

Jen BarrettBottle wine rack
Sustainable Design is embedded in all three
disciplines. Laura Cahill 08 Laura discovered
that old books are bound with glue that make them
difficult to recycle, so she was determined to
turn them into desirable objects like lighting,
furniture and ornaments. She took part in a live
debate on Sustainable Design on BBC TV at New
Designers 08.

John Caswell John was awarded 1st prize in the
RSA Ceramics Future competition. He works at Cod
Steaks, model makers for the film industry,
including Wallace Grommits A Close
Shave.Designer Makers work predominantly with
one off and batch produced objects. They also
have skills to work as product and furniture
designers in consultancy and industry.

Designing useful things sustainably.They like
sketching, CAD renderings, and making models to
gather feedback. They can make prototypes by CNC
machining, laser cutting or Rapid Prototyping.

Sean VentressSean is a design leader at Dyson.
After working in the Ball Vacuum team, his most
recently development is a new domestic Air
Multiplier fan which works differently to
conventional fans. It uses a new technology to
draw in air and amplify it 15 times. With no
blades or grille, its safe, easy to clean and
doesnt cause unpleasant buffeting.

Lawrence DawesAfter graduating with 1st Class
Hons degree from Plymouth, Lawrence was snapped
up by Lego at the New Designers exhibition. With
several products on the market, he has been
promoted to Creative Lead and is now working on
new concept products.

Luke WhiteAfter graduating with 1st Class (Hons)
degree from Plymouth, Luke enrolled on our MA
Design program and has been working at Zoeftig,
designing contract furniture that you can find in
many major international airports.

Oliver BlackwellAfter graduating from Plymouth,
Oliver is an entrepreneur, licensing several of
his designs for production. He set up his own
design consultancy, working in the areas of home
appliances, cookware, agricultural machinery and
the travel industry. Oliver won the Designer of
the Year Award at the Daily Mail Ideal Home
Exhibition with his Drumless Washing Machine that
needs no ironing.

Michial LeeWith industry interested in his USB
Garden project to encourage school children to do
more planting, Michial is now working as a
freelance design consultant working for several
companies.

Personal Dynamic Sound BoothDesigned for
AppleStores these personal sound booths are lined
up in one area of the store and have pulsating
