2
Project Goal
  • To deposit a resistance temperature detector
(RTD) onto a quartz crystal pressure transducer
    by
  • Directly depositing a platinum trace onto the
    crystal surface
  • or
  • Bonding a prefabricated film RTD to the surface
    of the crystal

3
Project Purpose
  • To achieve direct and more accurate measurements
    of temperature
  • Enhance the reliability and performance of
    products made by GRC.

4
What is an RTD?
(Copied from www.capgo.com)
  • resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), are
temperature sensors that exploit the predictable
change in electrical resistance of a material
with changing temperature. The most common
    material is platinum.

5
Wire-wound RTD
  • Can have greater accuracy, especially for wide
    temperature ranges.
  • The coil diameter provides a compromise between
    mechanical stability and accuracy.
  • Allows expansion of the wire to minimize strain
    and consequential drift.

6
Film Type RTD
  • Have an extremely thin layer of platinum on a
    substrate.
  • Advantage
  • Low cost and fast response compared to wire
    wound RTD.
  • Disadvantage
  • Different expansion rates of the substrate and
platinum give strain gauge" effects and has
    stability problems.

7
Applications
  • Will be used for temperature and pressure data
    acquisition in down hole applications
  • Will be used almost exclusively for the oil
    industry.
