Introduction

• Strong leaders were depended on in Mali
• Weak rulers caused empire to fall

Invaders/Raiders

• Raiders attacked Timbuktu, burned mosques and a
  school
• Maghan was unable to defend the city
• 1431, Tuareg (nomads from Sahara) seized Timbuktu

Size of the Empire

• Empire became so large, government lost control
• Parts of Mali began to break away

Kingdoms Began to Breakaway

• 1400, Gao declared its independence
• After Tuareg invaded, Timbuktu kingdom broke away
  
• 1500 almost all of Mali was gone

• Maghan could not stop invaders
• The empire was too large to control so the empire
  began to separate
• 1500, Mali was only a small part of what was once
  a rising empire
• One piece of Mali that broke away was before
  rising rapidly
