2
International Academic Mobility Why is it
Important for Canadian Higher Education
  • To prepare students for work in the global
    economy (competetiveness)
  • To increase students international skills,
knowledge and expertise, including linguistic and
    cultural understanding (culture)
  • To encourage joint development of curriculum,
    teaching materials and new educational
    technologies (curriculum)

3
International Academic Mobility North America
and Europe
  • The purpose of the two federally funded programs
is to promote a student-centred North American
and European dimension to education and training
in a wide range of academic disciplines.
  • The Canada-European Union Program for
Co-operation in Higher Education (established in
    1995)
  • The Program for North American Mobility in Higher
    Education (established in 1995)
  • To date, 179 projects have been funded,
involving over 80 higher education institutions
    in Canada.

4
Program Objectives
  • To improve the quality of human resource
    development in the participating countries.
  • To prepare students for work throughout North
    America and Europe by
  • the mutual recognition and portability of
    academic credits
  • the development of shared, common, or core
    curricula
  • the acquisition of languages and exposure to the
cultures of Canada, the United States, Mexico and
the twenty-seven country members of the European
    Union
  • the development of student apprenticeships or
    other work-related experiences
  • increased co-operation and exchange among
academic personnel with a focus on enhancing
    student mobility opportunities.

5
Typical Project Activities
  • Development of institutional partnerships
  • Student mobility
  • Curriculum development
  • Student exchange (usually for one semester)
  • New and innovative means of learning via new
    education technologies (so that non-mobile
students can also benefit from the projects)

6
Program Management
  • The International Academic Mobility Programs are
    administered federally by HRSDC (Learning
Branch) in Canada and by similar federal units in
    partner countries.
  • The duration of each project is four years for
the NA and three years for the EU Programs.
  • Each country provides financial assistance to
    participating institutions within its borders.
(In Canada, a maximum level of support of
160,000 is available per project under the NA
Program, and 200,000 under the Canada/EU
    Program).
  • Each consortium involves at least two higher
education institutions in each country. In
Canada, the partner institutions are from
    different provinces or territories.
