  • Use the following list as a guide for the main
    types of sentences and their effects.

  • Question
  • Command
  • Exclamation
  • Minor sentence

Statements
  • Definition
  • If a sentence is a statement it will tell you
    something
  • This is the most common type of sentence it will
    usually be other sentences you will need to
    comment on

  • Effect
  • Numerous statements create a calm or impersonal
    tone.
  • Example
  • The ice melts quickly.

Commands
  • Definition
  • These will give you an instruction, tell you to
    do something.
  • They will end with either a full stop or
    exclamation mark.

  • They can be seen frequently in adverts or to
    create a sense of talking directly to a reader.
  • Example
  • Think of a colour.

Questions
  • Definition
  • These will ask the reader something and will
    always end with a question mark.
  • Rhetorical questions do not require an answer.

  • These may challenge the reader or display doubt
    or uncertainty in the writer.
  • Rhetorical questions will provoke reactions in
    the reader and give an emotive tone (stirs up
    feelings or emotions.
  • Example
  • Why is that wall green?
  • Why would someone do that? (rhetorical)

  • Definitions
  • Do not have to contain a verb.
  • End in either a full stop or exclamation mark.
  • They show excitement or surprise in a text.

  • Example

  • Definition
  • These will not contain a verb.
  • Abbreviations of other sentences and may end in a
    full stop or a question mark.
  • Informal language and may be seen in direct
    speech, notes or diary entries.
