From 2005 Audited Financials

  • The System does not pursue collection of amounts
determined to qualify as charity care therefore,
they are not reported as revenue. As part of the
    System's charitable mission, its member
    organizations also provide services which
primarily benefit the medically under-served in
their communities. The System prepares an annual
report utilizing the methodology contained in the
    Catholic Health Association's Social
Accountability Report. The net unsponsored costs
of charity care, clinics, outreach programs and
community health education programs provided by
the System for the years ended December 31,2005
and 2004 was approximately 10,932,000 and
    14,274,000, respectively. Additionally, the
System calculates the amount of costs not
reimbursed by the Federal Medicare program. Those
unreimbursed costs were 26,336,000 in 2005 and
    27,503,000 in 2004

  • The provision of acute specialty healthcare
    services to Lewiston/Auburn, Maine surrounding
areas in furtherance of the organization's
charitable mission of promoting a healing
community. The cost of providing the service is
reduced by payments received for the service
resulting in a net cost. It is this net cost that
SMRMC reports as its commitment to charity care
and support for the broader community. Charity
care is comprised of the net cost of services
provided to the poor. Support for the broader
community includes the net cost of charity care
as well as the net cost of programs directed to
the poor and the unpaid costs of the Medicaid
program. Charity Care - 1,409,219 Cmty Benefit
Programs - 1,350,000 Unpaid Costs of Medicaid -

  • In 2005, St. Mary's added a Haiti "Sponsorship
Program" to its Haiti ministry. This program
supports the educational needs of Haitian school
children who attend schools run by the sisters
who founded St. Mary's in 1888. Staff and their
families join to provide school, uniforms, books,
and lunches to these children. In addition to
the Sponsorship Program, Sisters of Charity
Health System supports a facility for homeless
Haitian women in Jeremie, each year a work team
from the Medical Center goes to Haiti to offer
assitance and provide medical supplies to the St.
Boniface Hospital in Fonds des Blancs and at the
orphanage run by Lewiston native, Father Marc
    Boisvert in Les Cayes.
  • In response to the Katrina disaster, the
community at St. Mary's responded with great
generosity. A Disaster Fund was created and a
connection was made directly with a pastor in
Baton Rouge. One physican offered 5,000. From
our Fund for the Needy we designated 2,000.
Employees donated earned time and other
    miscellaneous donations. This money was
distributed to Catholic Community Services, the
Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille, St. Stephen
Parish in Pass Christian, MI and to St. Gabriel
Parish in the Gentilly section of New Orleans.
