What is a Fair trade School?

• Set up a Fair trade School Steering Group
• Write and adopt a whole school Fairtrade
  Policy
• Sell, promote and use Fairtrade products
• Learn about Fairtrade issues in the

  school and the
• wider community

Set up a Fairtrade Steering Group

• Members include 50 pupils
• Meet once a term
• Identify a named contact at the start of your
• application process
• Include pupils, teachers, catering staff,
  governors,
• parents, local Fairtrade representatives.
• Take responsibility for setting up the
  Fairtrade
• School Policy

Write and adopt a whole school Fairtrade Policy

• Include the policy in the school development
  plan
• Get it approved by the Governors
• Get it approved by the Governors
• Commit to it being discussed at School
  Council
• meetings
• Commit to promoting and selling as many
  Fairtrade
• products as possible
• Commit to doing more to promote Fairtrade
  after the
• school achieves its Fairtrade status.

Ensure the whole school learns about Fairtrade
issues

• Include Fair trade topics in lessons in 3
  curriculum
• areas 2 year groups
• Do three wider Fairtrade learning activities
• Learning about inequalities of world trade /
  benefits
• of Fair trade.
• Learn that what we buy makes a difference
• worldwide
• Collect lesson plans, pupils work ask the
  steering
• group to provide teachers with lesson
  ideas.

Selling, promoting and using Fairtrade products

• Provide and use Fair trade products at all events
• Use Fair trade products in the Staff Room /
  Common Rooms
• Plan to increase products year on year there
  are 2000 available!
• Monitor sales and record progress on range and
  value sold on an annual basis
• Encourage other local outlets / schools to
  provide Fair trade products.

Promote and take action in school and the wider
community

• Do 3 whole school activities and one in
  Fairtrade
• fortnightEg. Fairtrade Quiz evening
  Recipe Book,
• Box scheme, Christmas Hampers,
  Screensavers
• Do one thing to take Fairtrade to the wider
• community
• Collect evidence in newsletters, photos, press
• coverage.
• Make a Banner, offer students to speak at local
  events
