3
What is Project?
  • Project is the collection of activities, that
are related or connected, for developing a
    product or a service,
  • Projects have always start and end times.
  • Projects have always a customer who uses the
    results.

4
Project Name and Code
  • A Project Name must be specified.
  • A Project Code of a single word is useful.

5
Important Properties of Projects
  • Consists of temporary activities that have
    predetermined start and end dates.
  • Uses restricted resources.
  • It has a single goal or a set of goals .
  • All events are to be realized to develop a single
    and new output.
  • Usually has a budget.
  • Usually a project manager is responsible for
    coordinating all activities.

6
Daily Routine Jobs and Projects
  • Daily Routine Jobs
  • Repeated without any modification
  • Routine
  • Continuous
  • Done before
  • Will be done in the same way
  • Using experience and past knowledge
  • Known
  • Example Book press
  • Projects
  • Not repeatable
  • A new product or a service
  • Done once
  • Never done before
  • Will not be done in a similar manner
  • Little or no experience
  • Ambiguity
  • Your EE 494 projects

17
Project Planning 1/2
  • Project planning is done
  • To complete the project in time
  • To prevent and control delays
  • To use resources efficiently
  • Effective monitoring and control is possible..

18
Project Planning 2/2
  • All activities must be planned in details.
  • Detailing can be done in very many different
    ways.
  • A hierarchical approach
  • Activity tree

19
Activity tree (six level)
  • Organization as total
  • - Project
  • - Activity
  • - Sub activity
  • - Work package
  • - Jobs

20
Project Planning Methods
  • Main methods used in project planning
  • Gantt Diagram
  • PERT Diagram
  • Critical Path

Example Replacement of a Power Transformer
  • No Activity Start End
  • 1 Replacement design 1.6.03 5.6.03
  • 2 Trans. Procurement 6.6.03 18.6.03
  • 3 Announce Cut down 8.6.03 12.6.03
  • 4 Electricity Cut Down 13.6.03 13.6.03
  • 5 Remove old trans. 14.6.03 15.6.03
  • 6 Place new trans. 19.6.03 22.6.03
  • 7 Tests and control 23.6.03 23.6.03
