Title: Raise Your Chances Get your attendance right
1Raise Your Chances! Get your attendance right!
- What does Good attendance mean?
2- Do you know what your attendance is? You heard
about it at review day from your form tutor. - Do you know what it means?
- ?
3This is Simone. She is in Year 7 and has 90
attendance.
- Is that good?
- What does this mean?
4Simone thinks this is pretty good, so do her
parents. Are they right?
- 90 attendance ½ day missed every week!!
- (When you start work would your boss like you to
be off this much?).Thats practically part time!
Absent half a day every week
5Lets look a little closer..
- 1 school year at 90 attendance 4 whole weeks
of lessons MISSED!!!
38 school weeks
Absent for 4 weeks
690 attendance over 5 years of secondary school.
7What impact might this have on Simones life?
- Research suggests that 17 missed school days a
year a SATS level DROP in achievement at the
end of Year 9 and a GCSE grade lower in all
subjects in Year 11. (DfES) - The greater the attendance the greater the
achievement.
8So will your attendance influence what you can
earn?
Graduate degree 15.01 per hour
GCSEs 9.02 per hour.
no qualifications 7.44 per hour.
Potential Earnings average per hour
Qualifications
What do you want for your yourself?
9So 90 is not as good as it first seemed.
- What can do to increase
- your attendance?
you
10Pretty obvious really!
- Check back over your attendance record. What are
the patterns? Do you always feel ill on days when
you have a certain subject ..PE for instance? - Does something worry you about school? Find
someone to talk to about it.
11Ways for you to improve attendance (and
attainment)
- If you really are ill get someone at home to
phone school on the first day of absence. Stay in
touch with school and get back to it as soon as
you are able to be here. - Only take days off for genuine illness. (you will
know!!) - Avoid taking holidays in school time.
12Take pride in your achievements
- If your attendance level is 95 or above you
are doing well. Make sure that your form tutor
reflects that in your reference. - You deserve praise and reward for good attendance
dont mock when other people are congratulated
and rewarded they earned it.
13What else could help?
- Sometimes you may feel that you need to talk to
someone about reasons for your absence. There are
plenty of good listeners here. Start by speaking
to your Form Tutor. - You are not alone!
14Be aware that
- Lots of students feel inclined to take time off
in the run up to tests and coursework deadlines.
Dont! It doesnt help just hides a problem. - Being well organised can help relieve stress.
Keep an intelligent planner and always look
ahead. - Catching up with missed work is important. A
missed day doesnt mean missed work. - But dont be too hard on yourselves. Do take the
chance to celebrate a piece of coursework handed
in, revision completed, a topic learned.
15Attend and Achieve!
- If you can improve your attendance by 1, you
will see a 5-6 improvement in attainment.
(Department for Education and Skills) - Get your attendance above 95, and be the very
best you can
