Title: Adaptations of a Populous Nation

1
Adaptations of a Populous Nation
  • How Japan Deals with its Population Density

2
Population Growth
  • Birth Rate
  • of babies born each year
  • Death Rate
  • - of people who die each year
  • Natural Rate of Increase
  • - Birth Rate - Death Rate
  • - Fast fast (or slow) a population is growing
  • If birth rate is higher than death rate, a
    countries population goes up.
  • Reasons for population growth
  • The death rate has declined because of better
    health care and living conditions.

3
Population Density
  • Means how crowded a place is
  • Total population is divided by the total land
    area.
  • Population density is an average.
  • Many people live in cities more densely
    populated.

4
Background
  • Japan is densely populated. The Kantô  and Nôbi
plains are home to Japan's largest cities- Tokyo
and Nagoya- and over half of the nation's people.
  • Most people live near the coast since its flat
    land
  • Population Density Map

5
Problems with Population Density
  • More Pollution
  • Traffic
  • Less land to farm
  • Loss of Habitat for
  • animals
  • Less resources

6
Solutions to Population Density
  • 1.Build Skyscrapers
  • Instead of building their cities out, city
    planners have built cities up.
  • Allows for more people to live in less space

7
Solutions to Population Density
  • 2. Public Transportation
  • - Japan has a massive subway system
  • Not as many cars

8
Solutions to Population Density
  • 3. Terracing the landscape
  • - Less than 1/5 of Japan is arable land.
  • Arable land that can be farmed
  • - To increase the amount of land that can
produce food, farmers create a staircase
    effect.
  • Picture of Terracing

  • What happened to your MMs after 15th generation?
Using your data (NUMBERS!!), what do you predict
would happen in the 20th generation? Based on
what you learned today about adaptations, what
possible solutions could you come up with to
lessen the impact of population density in your
    MM city?
