Denominators
Vocabulary

quantity expressed in terms of a numerator and
denominator
denominator
the number below the line in a fraction, stating
the size of the parts in relation to the whole
numerator
the number above the line in a fraction which
shows how many parts are taken

Bench Mark 50 Add Fractions with Different
Denominators
Fractions can only be added if they have the
same, or a common, denominator.
4
Bench Mark 50 Add Fractions with Different
Denominators
Fractions can only be added if they have the
same, or a common, denominator.
If the fractions have a common denominator (or
in the case of our model, pieces the same size),
then addition will be very simple.
5
Bench Mark 50 Add Fractions with Different
Denominators
To add fractions with unlike denominators, we see
that we must find a common denominator to make
addition a simple process.
First, find the lowest common denominator by
listing the multiples for each denominator.
We can see that the lowest common denominator is
6.
Next, we multiply the numerators by the same
amount needed to change the denominator into a
common denominator.
Finally, we add the add the fractions together.
(Remember to simplify the answer if it is not in
simplest form.)
Therefore,
