- The Process
- The need for this project was identified on the
basis of (a) MTAs market, product, HR and
economic research findings (b) MTAs Strategic
Plan and its identification of tourisms priority
areas and (c) MTAs active participation in the
Structural Funds preparation phase. - Extensive consultation with the industry was
carried out, including a tourism sectoral working
group, leading to the drafting of the National
Development Plan. - Extensive technical guidance was obtained from
Spain, UK, and Italy, through OPMs assistance
(Managing Authority for the Structural Funds) to
confirm the eligibility of the areas of
intervention under the Scheme in terms of the
relevant EU legislation.

- The scheme funds projects falling under the
following four key intervention areas - Environmental Initiatives (resource efficiency
measures) - Upgrading of accessibility facilities for
travellers with mobility problems - Upgrading of infrastructure, immovable equipment
and IT systems - Marketing Initiatives (participation in
international fairs)

- The Grant Scheme
- Grant Scheme Value
- The total value of the Scheme is EUR 2,500,000.
- This includes contributions from three sources
- European Regional Development Fund (EUR 874,500
35) - Malta Government Funds (EUR625,500 25)
- Private Sector Contribution (EUR 1,000,000 40)

- The Grant Scheme
- Guidance Notes have been prepared to assist
applicants in submitting Application Forms. Both
the Guidance Notes and the Application Form are
available online at www.mta.com.mt - The Strategic Planning and Research Division
(MTA), which is the Project Leader, will be
available for assisting applicants throughout the
application process. - There will be quarterly cut-off dates following
which - submitted projects will be evaluated, ranked,
and awarded - grants. The first cut-off date for projects to
be submitted is the 30th of September 2004.

- The Grant Scheme
- The MTA, together with the Ministry for Tourism
and Culture, will be the responsible for the
evaluation of submitted projects. - Projects will be initially checked for their
eligibility in terms of the Schemes parameters.
Subsequently, a full appraisal process will be
carried out focussing primarily on each projects
contribution towards the four horizontal issues
of the Structural Funds promotion of sustainable
development, promotion of equal opportunities,
promotion of investment in ICT, and promotion of
tourism policy and strategy.
