OVERVIEW
  • What is Radar?
  • How does it work?
  • Capabilities
  • Users

3
What is Radar?
  • Radar stands for Radio Detection and Ranging,
therefore a Radar is a system of components that
use electromagnetic waves to detect objects and
calculate their size, shape, and location.
  • Depending on configuration and user needs Radar
can also reveal even more information

4
How Does it Work?
  • Radar uses a series of components that work
    together
  • 5 Main components
  • Synchronizer
  • Transmitter-Modulator
  • Antenna System
  • Receiver
  • Display System

5
Capabilities
  • Radar systems capabilities depend on their
respective component's abilities to produce a
    pulse of electromagnetic waves
  • These waves are transmitted by the system to the
target or area or object of interest and
    reflected back to the system
  • The system then uses information gathered by the
characteristics of the wave to compute
    information about the object

6
CAPABILITIES CONT
  • Radar can penetrate into deep space
  • Near Earth object tracking
  • Underground/Underwater mapping
  • Mapping of other terrestrial bodies

7
USERS
  • Radar is used by a wide variety of users
  • Military
  • Law Enforcement
  • NASA
  • Naval/Navigation
  • Commercial/Private Air Craft (Navigation) and
    collision avoidance
