• French assistance of US in American Revolution
• May 1789 Meeting of Estates General, first
  meeting since 1614
• June 1789 Third Estate (commoners) declare
  selves National Assembly

Events Leading to Revolution

• June 27, 1789 Louis XVI legalizes National
  Assembly
• July 14 Storming of Bastille. Seven prisoners
  freed (none were political)
• August 4 Equal rights declared throughout
  France.

The Revolution Comes

• Aug. 14 Nobility and clergy renounce privileges
  out of fear
• Oct. 5 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
  imprisoned
• 1791 Louis XVI accepts the constitution written
  by the National Assembly

The Revolution Continues

• 1792 Paris establishes separate city government
• Jan. 21, 1793 Louis XVI and Antoinette
  guillotined
• 1793 France adopts de-Christianized calander,
  which remains until 1806

Napolean Tightens His Grip

• Aug. 1793 Napoleon takes command of artillary,
  begins seige of Toulon
• Oct. 1795 Napoleon named General in Chief of
  the Interior Army
• Mar. 1796 Napolean named General in Chief of
  Italian Army

Napoleon Takes Control

• Oct. 1797 Napoleon signs treaty with Austria
  without authorization
• 1797-1800 Napoleon embarks on a series of
  military campaigns, again without authorization
• 1802 Napoleon named Consul for Life
