homestead of the followers of Snot. Snot is
probably a nickname meaning either snout, nose
or wise Anglo-Saxon personal name OE -ingas
OE ham. The same group, the Snotingas, gave name
to neighbouring Sneinton. An older British name
of the place is known Tigguocobauc house of
caves, alluding to the sandstone caves of Castle
Hill.
