4- culture -
Lithuania is influenced by various different
cultures. For one reason, the long independence
and preservation of a non-christian state
religion, for another reason, the long common
history with Poland, connections to the Hanse and
the Baltic see and to the russian czars, the
origin of the orthodox churches in the large
cities. In the west northern european, hansean
traditions are visible, with strong german,
danish and swedish roots. In the East, especially
Vilnius, numerous polish cultural elements are
visible. Vilnius will be the first city of the
newly joined EU member states, to receive the
status of Cultural Capital in 2009. A sign that
shows, that the EU wishes for stronger
connections and bonds between the
cultures. UNESCO-Cultural Heritage The baroque
old part of Vilnius is designated as a
World-heritage site, also the Dunes on the
peninsula Kurische Nehrung (Neringa) and the
archeological site Kernave.
