4SOME DEFINITIONS
- SACE South Australian Certificate of Education
- STAGE 1 The first of the two stages of the SACE
usually, but not necessarily, taken by students
at Year 11 - STAGE 2 The second of the two stages of the
SACE usually, but not necessarily, taken by
students at Year 12
5MORE DEFINITIONS
- UNIT SACE subjects are described as 1-unit or
2-unit subjects. A SACE unit is 50-60 hours of
programmed school time. - SEMESTER A half-year. Each SACE unit of50-60
hours of programmed school time is usually
completed in one semester - At Stage 1 - most students will study 6 units in
each semester. - At Stage 2 - most students will study 5 units in
each semester.

- 4. Any area of study

- Maximum of 50 of final mark comes from
examination, remainder from school assessment - Examination used as basis for comparison of
teachers standards

- Mathematical procedure which makes the
distribution of school marks for the class more
closely resemble the distribution of the classes
examination marks. - The ranking provided by the teacher is retained
for the school-assessed component.

- Obtain a score of 3 or more in at least 5 Stage
2 subjects (10 units) - Meet HESS subject requirements for the course
- Meet prerequisite requirements for the course
33SCALING
- Mathematical process carried out by SSABSA on
behalf of the universities - Raw scores for subjects are adjusted to reconcile
variations due to assessment requirements of
different subjects - Scaled scores are only used to calculate
aggregates for University entrance. They have no
other purpose - Effects of scaling are not known in advance

36TERTIARY ENTRANCE RANK (TER)
- All students are ranked according to their
aggregate - The TER describes where students sit in this rank
- e.g. if a score of 77.0 out of 90 or better has
been obtained by 6.0 of the cohort then the
score of 77 will correspond to a TER of 94.0 (100
- 6)
