Title: Chrysostomos Tziouvaras

1
GRNET3 update
  • Chrysostomos Tziouvaras
  • Broadband Infrastructures Development Manager
  • Greek Research and Technology Network
  • CEF Workshop
  • Prague, 29 May 2006

2
Migrating from GRNET2 to GRNET3
  • The GRNET network at its current state (GRNET2)
is built on leased DWDM lambdas for connecting IP
    routers
  • The next generation GRNET network (GRNET3) will
be built on owned (long term IRUs) DF links

3
Tenders for dark fibre
  • A tender for acquiring 15-year IRUs was issued at
    February 2005
  • For three regional links (blue lines)
  • Budget 4,07MEuros
  • Status contracts signed with OTE
  • Another tender for acquiring 15-year IRUs was
    issued at February 2006
  • For covering major Greek cities (green lines)
  • Budget13,1MEuros
  • Status contracts are to be signed within June
    2006

4
Specifications
  • Single-mode fiber pair
  • Availability 99
  • Monitoring and failure reporting
  • Failure recovery
  • 3 days for repairing terrestrial links
  • 20 days for repairing submarine links
  • Maintenance downtime cannot exceed 6
    hours/year/link
  • SLA for the optical characteristics of the DF
    links (attenuation, CD, PMD)
  • Collocation services at terminal and intermediate
    sites
  • Optionally
  • G.655 fiber
  • Automatic failure notification

5
Results
  • Tender published at 2005 932 km of DF
  • Optical transmission equipment deployment is
    underway
  • Tender published at 2006 2157 km of DF
  • To be delivered within 6 months after contracts
    will have been signed

Attenuation 0.32 dB/Km , 0.25 dB/Km
(submarine) CD G.652 -gt 16.5 ps/nm/km
(at 1550 nm) G.653 -gt 0 ps/nm/km
(at 1550 nm) PMD 0.050 ps/(Km)1/2

Equipment tenders
  • A tender for acquiring optical transmission
equipment for lighting the three regional DF
links was published at September 2005
  • Budget 375KEuros (including 3 years support)
  • Status contract signed with Adva (Siemens
    Hellas)

7
Technical offer I
  • FSP2000 with DWDM lambdas
  • Passive components
  • 4 lambda mux/demux _at_C-band
  • Upgrade up to 32 lambdas in steps of 4
  • Multirate Transponders
  • 3R
  • Support all data rates from 100Mbps to 2,5Gbps
  • Transparent interfaces
  • Can be used as regenerator
  • Ability to create loops (local and line sides)
    through NMS
  • ALS support

8
Technical offer II
  • Network Element Management Interface (NEMI)
  • Manages all active components
  • Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC)
  • Path for communicating management traffic between
    FSP2000 nodes and the NMS
  • Extra lambda at 1630nm
  • Full duplex 100Mbps Ethernet
  • Optical input power measurement
  • Fiber degradation monitoring at 1630nm
  • Fixed Gain C-band EDFAs
  • All lambdas get the same amplification

9
Technical offer III
  • The Athens-Chania case submarine link featuring
    2 spans of about 170km

10
RFI for optical switching equipment
  • In order to prepare forthcoming tender for
lighting DF links covering the rest Greek cities,
    an RFI was published
  • Focusing on
  • products and architectures that could enable
automatic L1/2 circuit provisioning to selected
    GRNET clients (e.g. Grid nodes)
  • 13 manufacturers responded to this RFI

11
RFI results I
  • Types of boxes that could be used for automatic
    L1/2 circuit provisioning
  • NG-SDH switches typical SDH switches (VC-x based
    switching fabric) with data (1/10GbE)
    capabilities.
  • ROADM. Switch (OOO or OEO) based on lambda
    without sub-lambda processing
  • Hybrid. Use linecards with VC-x grooming and
    include ROADM card

12
RFI results II
  • NG-SDH switches highlights
  • Nx1GbE client signals aggregation is supported in
    two ways
  • Each 1GbE client signal is mapped to an
appropriately sized VCG (full line rate)
  • 1GbE client signals are aggregated through a line
card featuring L2 capabilities and are mapped to
smaller size VCGs. Mapping can be based on MPLS,
    802.1Q.
  • Most manufacturers support both options
  • Relevant standards (GFP/VCAT/LCAS) are followed
  • Jumbo frames support

13
RFI results III
  • Currently, most manufacturers do not support a
control plane for automating circuit provisioning
  • Roadmaps include control plane support
    (especially GMPLS) by early 2007

14
Future plans
  • Further extension of the DF backbone (tender to
    be published within 2006)
  • Enable GRNET clients access to the DF cloud
    through
  • Acquiring IRUs for clients located in Athens and
Thessaloniki (tender to be published within 2006)
  • Utilising Municipal Fibre Networks (MFNs) that
are currently built in most Greek cities
expected to be available by mid 2007
  • CBF interconnection
