Texas College Readiness Standards
  • High School Completion and Success Council
  • January 25, 2008

2
Very Brief Summary of Process
  • Vertical Teams established in four foundation
areas of the public school curriculum
    English/language arts, mathematics, science,
    social sciences
  • Teams met four times in person
  • Reviewed other sets of standards, both high
    school and college level
  • Had homework assignments in between meetings
  • Co-chairs had numerous conference calls

3
Brief Summary of Process
  • THECB held a public comment period from October
    25 December 10
  • Received over 1,000 comments from primarily from
community colleges and higher education faculty
  • Approximately 30 of the comments came from
    public education personnel

4

Average Percent Agree by Subject Area
5
Organization of College Readiness Standards
  • Standards are organized into four subject areas
and a set of cross-disciplinary standards
  • Each area presents knowledge and skill
expectations hierarchically in order to reveal
    the structure of the area
  • This is consistent with research on key skills
    for postsecondary success

6
Example of the Standards
  • II. Reading (Key Concept)
  • A. Locate explicit textual information, and draw
complex inferences, analyze, and evaluate the
information within and across texts of varying
    lengths (Organizing Theme )
  • 1. Compare and analyze how generic features are
used across texts, (Performance Expectation )
  • Analyze the use of persona in texts with diverse
    voices. (Performance Indicator )

7
Performance Indicators
  • PERFORMANCE INDICATORS ARE
  • NOT MANDATED
  • NOT A CHECKLIST
  • EXAMPLES OF HOW STUDENTS CAN DEMONSTRATE
    COMPETENCY OF PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION.

8
Performance Indicators
  • THE MORE PERFORMANCE INDICATORS A STUDENT CAN
ACCOMPLISH THE MORE PREPARED THEY WILL BE FOR
    POSTSECONDARY EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER
    OPPORTUNITIES.

9
Current Status
  • Texas CRS were adopted by the THECB on January
    24, 2008
  • Standards then go to the Commissioner of
    Education for review and approval
  • SBOE infuses standards into four foundation areas
of the curriculum over the next four years

10
Next Steps
  • Texas CRS will be used to determine the Texas
    Success Indicator (TSI) in 2012
  • CRS will be used for End of Course examinations
as they are developed (there is a separate
component on each EOC that assesses college
    readiness)

Suggestions Please!
  • How might we engage public/higher education
faculty and business community to assure
    implementation of standards?
  • What groups do Council members believe would be
critical to engage in discussion on standards?
  • What do Council members believe next steps should
include to assure implementation of standards at
    classroom level?
