1Faculty Performance Review Session

2- PURPOSE
- Faculty performance evaluation shall occur within
a framework that - acknowledges and appreciates quality
performance - assesses clear and measurable skills and
behaviours - clarifies employment expectations
- identifies training and development needs
- supports the alignment of faculty goals with
those - of the college
- incorporates input from students, faculty and
administration
3FREQUENCY Probationary and partial load
professors shall have their performance evaluated
each teaching semester. Part-time and sessional
professors shall have their performance evaluated
each semester for the first 24 months of
employment. Non-probationary full-time
professors shall have their performance evaluated
at least once, every 24 months.
4- PROCEDURE
- Probationary full-time and Partial Load
Professors - This evaluation process will occur in each
teaching semester and will include - A classroom/laboratory/studio/field placement
observation, at the discretion of the Dean, using
the Classroom Observation Evaluation Form to note
feedback. - An option for the professor to prepare the
Pre-classroom Observation Form. Either the Dean
or the professor being evaluated may elect to
have this component completed. - Review of the most recently completed Students
Perceptions of Learning Course Evaluation Forms
for courses taught by the professor.
5- Probationary full-time and Partial Load
Professors (contd) - An option for the professor to prepare the
Faculty Self-Reflection on Classroom Observation
Form. Either the Dean or the professor being
evaluated may elect to have this component
completed. - The completion, by the professor, of the
Faculty Self-Reflection Form. - The completion of the Faculty Performance
Evaluation Summary. This document will be
provided to the professor being evaluated, with a
copy in his/her personnel file maintained by the
Human Resources department.
6- PROCEDURE

Form and the Students Perceptions of Learning
Evaluation Form will be provided to the
professor, with a copy retained in the School
Divisional Office.
8- PROCEDURE
- Non-Probationary full-time Professors
- This evaluation process will occur at least once
every two (2) years and will include - A classroom/laboratory/studio/field placement
observation, at the discretion of the Dean, using
the Classroom Observation Evaluation Form to note
feedback. - An option for the professor to prepare the
Pre-classroom Observation Form. Either the Dean
or the professor being evaluated may elect to
have this component completed. - Review of the most recently completed Students
Perceptions of Learning Course Evaluation Forms
for courses taught by the professor.

- An option for the professor to prepare the
Faculty Self-Reflection on the Classroom
Observation Form. Either the Dean or the
professor being evaluated may elect to have this
component completed. - The completion by the professor of the Faculty
Self-Reflection Form. - The completion of the Faculty Performance
Evaluation Summary. This document will be
provided to the faculty member being evaluated,
with a copy being retained in his/her personnel
file maintained by the Human Resources
department.

11Pre-Classroom Observation Form (optional)
- Either the faculty member being evaluated, or
the Dean/Associate Dean may elect to have this
form completed by the faculty member. - This form provides background information for
the observer, to better understand the
educational context and learning environment in
which he or she is observing the faculty member. - This form, if utilized, must be provided to the
Dean/Associate Dean at least two (2) working days
before the classroom/lab observation. - A lesson plan must accompany this completed
form.

12Classroom Observation Evaluation Form
- The classroom/lab observation may occur before
or after the Students Perceptions of Learning
Course Evaluation Form is completed. - A lesson plan should be provided to the
Dean/Associate Dean in advance of the lesson
being observed. - This form is to be completed by the
Dean/Associate Dean and shared with the faculty
member during a follow-up discussion on
performance. - This form provides specific content for a
conversation about faculty teaching and student
learning quality, using one 50 minute lesson as
the basis for dialogue. - The criteria for describing quality include
variety and pacing of instruction organization
clarity presentation skills content knowledge
and professor-student rapport. Additional space
to comment on other areas of performance is also
included.

13Faculty Self-Reflection on the Classroom
Observation Form (optional)
- Either the faculty member being evaluated, or
the Dean/Associate Dean may elect to have this
form completed by the faculty member. - This form provides the faculty member with an
opportunity to consider the outcome of the
observed 50 minute lesson, and document personal
perceptions in advance of a dialogue with the
Dean or Associate Dean about performance. - This form, if utilized, must be provided to the
Dean/Associate Dean at or before the follow-up
discussion about performance.

14Students Perceptions of Learning Course
Evaluation Form
- This form is intended to gather information
from students about the quality of learning
experiences in an individual course section. - Student feedback is collected so as to maintain
anonymity and results are distributed to the
professor being evaluated after the submission of
grades. - Procedure
- Blank evaluation forms are available for pick
up at the school offices. - The professor chooses appropriate number of
classes (one or two) for evaluation, as outlined
in the faculty letter distributed by the
respective school. - The professor and/or a student in the class
distribute the forms to the group of students. - The professor can remain in the classroom.
- After the group of students complete the
evaluations, the professor and the student will
place the completed evaluations in the envelope
provided both will sign over the seal and one
will agree to return the envelope to the school
office.

15Faculty Self-Reflection Form
- This form is to be completed by full-time
faculty (both probationary and non-probationary)
and partial-load faculty. - The purpose of this form is to gather
information about the broad range of skills and
abilities faculty members bring to Durham
College. - Criteria for describing quality faculty
performance include his/her philosophy of
teaching knowledge of the discipline classroom
approach rapport with students administrative
responsibilities college involvement and
community/external involvement. Additional space
to comment on career goals and professional
development requests is also provided. - This form must be provided to the
Dean/Associate Dean at or before the follow-up
discussion about performance.

16Faculty Performance Evaluation Summary
- This form is to be completed by the Dean, upon
completion of all applicable performance
evaluation documents and the conclusion of an
in-person follow-up discussion about performance
with the faculty member. - This form provides a broad overview of
performance as evaluated by students during a
course the Dean/Associate Dean in an episodic
classroom visit and the faculty member through
self-reflective practice. - Space is provided for a synopsis of faculty
strengths, recommendations for performance
enhancement and faculty comments about the
evaluation (outcome, process etc.).
