Title: Evolving the CRL

1
Evolving the CRL
  • Evolution path for Fermilabs Electronic Logbook

2
What we know
  • Electronic logbooks are here to stay
  • Paper logs are no longer desirable.
  • We know what we need and how to do it.
  • We get many requests for logbooks.
  • CRL has been recommended by ILC TA Logbook
Evaluation task force on the merits of
  • Architecture and ability to evolve
  • Features
  • Maturity
  • Ambiguous support leaves users puzzled and wastes
    resources
  • Three in house choices (AD, TD, CD), without
    clear recommendation
  • Each logbook needs to be supported (each 0.1 -
    0.3 FTE)
  • Each project has to do its own evaluation (6
    people 2 months)
  • Some come to the conclusion to write their own
    ( 1 FTE)
  • HEPBook is no longer an evolution path for the
    CRL
  • Leaves us without a plan.

3
Current CRL users
  • D0 537,000 Entries
  • Minos 54,000
  • MIPP28,000
  • MiniBooNE22,000
  • CMS HCAL?
  • CMS Pixel1,200
  • Dark Energy Survey122
  • ILCTA2000
  • MuCool 2

  • 11/5/05 MuCool Test Area ,Illinois Institute of
    Technology, torun_at_iit.edu

5
Goal
  • Evolve and renovate the CRL to fill the need for
an electronic logbook at Fermilab and for its
    collaborators.
  • Provide
  • New Features, the logbook should provide new
features as new requirements and new technology
    arises (such as security)
  • Support, qualified users should be able to
request a logbook and have it available within a
    few hours.
  • Service, the logbook should be available as a
service. CD provides web server and database.
  • Open source, the logbook should become open
source so that collaborations spanning countries
    can adapt it and contribute.

6
Stakeholders in 2 - 5 years from now
  • LHC
  • LPC
  • LHC_at_FNAL does not have its own logbook. Uses
    CMS and LHC Accelerator logbook
  • CMS is driven by CERNs electronic logbook
    choice. Currently not the CRL
  • ILC
  • Uses CRL for test area
  • Astrophysics
  • Uses CRL for Dark Energy
  • Neutrino Experiments
  • CRL is used for Minos and MiniBooNE

7
Tasks
  • Immediate Development on the CRL
  • ILC Test Area installation (completed)
  • Security based on passwords, SSL certificates,
    and Kerberos. (in progress)
  • Evolution Development
  • Renovated Data Format a universal
    machine-readableformat that allows automated
processing of data data mining, and conversion
    to multiple presentation forms.
  • Searching Indexing of entry text for word
    searching (Lucene). Searching attachments.
  • Full Annotations Allow images and attachments in
    annotations.
  • Deployment Quicker and Easier deployment/configur
    ation management.
  • User Interface Refine the user interface to make
it easier to configure on an individual and
    installation basis

8
Migrating Existing Logbooks
  • Migrating a logbook should be evaluated on an
    individual basis.
  • CRL There are many installations of the CRL. D0
and Minos will want to migrate, others will not.
  • TD A migration strategy from the TD logbook to
the CRL should be part of this plan.
  • AD It is unlikely that the MCR will migrate to
the new logbook. New projects in the AD will be
encouraged to choose the new logbook. If the CRL
is mature and available, it may be attractive for
    AD after RUN II.

9
Resources
  • Important to include Computer Pros from all three
    divisions.
  • Immediate feature development (security, minor
requests from ILC, and maintenance of current CRL
    2006)
  • AD 0.3 FTE (A.Petrov)
  • CD 0.3 FTE (S.Gysin)
  • TD 0.1 FTE (J.Nogiec)
  • Evolution 1.5 - 2 years)
  • AD 0.5 FTE (A.Petrov)
  • CD 0.5 FTE (S.Gysin)
  • TD 0.5 FTE (J.Nogiec)

10
Next Steps
  • Start on immediate development tasks
  • Implement security and upgrade the existing
    installations
  • Receive a charge and commitment of resources from
    ??

11
Summary
  • Fermilab needs an electronic logbook
  • CRL has been chosen by ILC TA Logbook Evaluation
    Task Force from 8 candidates
  • HEPBook is no longer an evolution path for the
    logbook
  • Ambiguous support leaves users puzzled and wastes
    resources
  • Proposal Evolve/renovate the CRL for FNAL and
    its collaborators
  • Inter-division team 0.5 FTE from each AD, CD, TD
    for 2 years.
