DEFINITION OF CERAMICS

• A Greek word (keramos) which means potters
  clay.
• An art and technique of producing clay or
  porcelain objects which are fired.
• Also called pottery.

CLASSIFICATION OF CLAY

• Clays are usually classified as residual or
  sedimentary clay.

RESIDUAL CLAY

• Clay found near the original rock source and are
  regarded as the purest clay

SEDIMENTARY CLAY

• Clay that has been carried away from its original
  source by water or erosion. This type of clay
  contains a lot of substances.

PROPERTIES OF CLAY

• Plasticity- This refers to the elasticity of the
  clay.
• Porosity- The ability to absorb water, air and
  fluids. Clay must be able to breath.
• Vitrification- The ability to be converted into a
  glassy state during firing in order to make it
  strong and hard.

QUALITIES OF CLAY

• 1. Kaolin -pure residual clay.
• -low plasticity.
• -resistance to heat (can withstand
  high
• temperature.)
• -fires to white colour.
• 2.Ball -very plastic.
• -used to blend with other clays
• 3.shale-very common clay.
• -used for making bricks.
• -low resistance to heat.
• 4. Stoneware-sedimentary clay.
• -fires at higher degree
  temperature.

• -high resistance to heat.
• -can be mixed with other clays.
• 6.porcelain- this is prepared clay(Kaolin is
  the main ingredient in mixing
  porcelain clay.)
• -fires at very high temperature
