Title: Star Types

1
Star Types
2
Classification
  • Stars are classified by temperature
  • We see temperature as different colored stars
  • Blue starshottest
  • Red starscoldest

3
Magnitude
  • Magnitude how bright one star is compared to
    another
  • Positive numbersdimmer stars
  • Negative numbersbrighter stars

4
Star Types
  • Nebula- where stars are born.
  • Made out of gas and dust
  • Pulsars Stars that emit bursts of energy

5
Star Types
  • Red Supergiant-largest, most massive, and
brightest kind of star in the universe
  • Binary stars-twin stars that orbit each other

6
Star types
  • Dwarf Starrelatively small stars (types black,
    brown, red, yellow, white)
  • Our sun is a yellow dwarf
  • White dwarf- a star that is dying
  • Black dwarf- a star with no more heat (cant see)
  • Alpha centauriour closest star!
  • 4.37 light years away

7
Star Types
  • Nova-A white dwarf star that suddenly looks very
bright in the sky, lasts a few days, then returns
    to normal
  • Hydrogen trapped on the surface of the star burns
    off
  • May repeat this process over many years
  • Supernova-An exploding supergiant, which may form
either a neutron star or a black hole

8
Star Types
  • Neutron star- The tiniest type of star, made
    after a supernova collapses
  • Extremely dense
  • Black hole-the remains of a collapsed supernova
that has such great gravity, light cant escape
