Title: Our journey continues

1
Our journey continues
  • With a reflection on the past
  • In your notebook, please write a response to each
    of the scenarios below
  • Mrs. Smith cannot understand why her second grade
son cannot skip third grade. After all, she
says, your own test scores show hes reading and
doing math at a fifth grade level. How do you
diplomatically respond to Mrs. Smith as to why
her son may not really be ready for fifth-grade
    reading and math?
  • Linda Jones is a new teacher just out of college.
Parent conferences are around the corner and she
wants to give the parents a clear picture of
their childs achievement using standardized test
scores. Further, she plans to use the scale
score, not grade or age equivalents or
percentiles. As a seasoned veteran, what advice
    would you give to Linda?

Scores - The Label
6
How would you respond?
  • Mr. Jackson
  • Except for two of the subtests, this look
just like Thomas score reports from previous
years. Thomas has always done better in
reading than writing until this test. Wed
    better get him a tutor

7
Interpreting Standardized Test Scores The Label
8
How would you respond?
  • Thomas
  • I was sick when I took the TAP, so the low score
on Science must be because of that. I know all
about science stuff and dont need to worry about
    it.

9
Activity 3 Looking at a Criterion-Referenced
Skills Analysis or Mastery Report
  • How would you respond to this parent?
  • I cant believe it! It says right here that
this test is for tenth- grade level students.
How can you give a tenth-grade test to a
fourth grader and expect valid results?

Looking back at the Criterion-Referenced Skills
Analysis or Mastery Report
  • How would you respond to this parents comment?
  • Mrs. Cooper, Im appalled at Lindas performance
on the ITBS. Shes never had a grade below C and
yet she got two zeros, a thirty-eight, and
several fifties and sixties on this test. I
dont want her to be promoted if she doesnt know
her basics. What do you suggest I do with her?
    Should we retain her?
