Title: Literary Baseball Card

1
Literary Baseball Card
  • MLA Project

2
Overview
  • Create a Baseball Card that contains important
information about a randomly chosen author
  • This project is a test of MLA skills. Therefore,
any student who does not include necessary MLA
components (citations and Works Cited Page) will
    not score a passing grade
  • Students who do not use the correct number and/or
type of sources will not score a passing grade

3
Overview contd
  • This project will count for TWO grades
  • SOME class time will be allotted for students to
complete this project however, any student who
does not complete the work during the time
allotted must complete it OUTSIDE of class
  • NO ONE will use my computer to print any portion
    of this project

4
Overview contd
  • This project is due NO LATER THAN the beginning
of class November 10, 2009. Any student who is
late to class FOR ANY REASON that day will
    receive a zero.
  • Students who turn the project in MORE THAN 24
hours before the final deadline will receive 5
    extra credit points.
  • This project will not be accepted late for any
reason. Students are encouraged to turn it in
early to avoid receiving a zero.

5
Overview contd
  • ANY student who is found to be off-task at any
time while we are in the computer lab/media
center working on this project will be required
to turn in all work IMMEDIATELY, and it will be
    graded as a completed project.
  • Because of the nature of this project, students
may use bullets for all information on the back
    of the card

6
Front of the Card
  • A picture of the author. Unless you are a very
talented artist, this picture should be computer
    generated and printed
  • Name of the author (prominent and artistically
    rendered)
  • TWO graphics that pertain to the major themes
    used by this author

7
Back Of Card
  • Date of birth
  • Date of death
  • Place of birth
  • Date(s) of marriage(s) and name(s) of spouse(s)
  • Name of child(ren)
  • Titles of major works AND dates of publication
  • THREE major themes used by this author
  • THREE MAJOR social/political events that occurred
during the lifetime of this author. USE EVENTS
THAT WOULD HAVE AFFECTED THIS AUTHOR. Include
    dates.

8
Other Requirements
  • EVERY student must use a minimum of 3 (THREE)
    sources
  • Only ONE can be from the Internet (No Wikipedia
    or any .com sites)
  • Only ONE encyclopedia (regardless of whether it
is print, online, or electronic) I REALLY
dislike encyclopedias. Keep that in mind!
  • A MINIMUM of ONE book source
  • A Works Cited Page using MLA guidelines MUST BE
    USED!

9
Other Requirements contd
  • Try these sites for MLA documentation
  • http//owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/
  • http//www.liu.edu/CWIS/CWP/library/workshop/citml
    a.htm
  • http//citationmachine.net/
  • OR my website. There is a Powerpoint there with
the three main types of citations and a sample
    Works Cited Page

10
Other Requirements contd
  • EVERY bullet must have a citation. NO
    EXCEPTIONS!
  • Every bullet must be included on your cardeven
if it doesnt apply to your author (eg. If your
author is still alive, you must still have that
bullet, and it must have a citation!)
  • Label your bullets. If your card does not state
what information I am looking at, you will lose
    points.
  • I expect proper punctuation. If you do not use
punctuation correctly, you will not receive full
    credit.
  • Cards should be neat and artistically created.
Messy cards that contain all of the necessary
information will NOT earn a 100.
