Dynamic Character

• Dynamic Character-a character who undergoes a
  permanent change in outlook or character during
  the story.
• Example Lyra Belaqua in the His Dark Materials
  Trilogy by Philip Pullman. She changes
  dramatically in the story.

Foreshadowing

• Foreshadowing-technique used by authors to
  provide clues for the reader to be able to
  predict what might occur later in the story
• Example Macbeth-the weird sisters chant and give
  prophetic messages that later occur

Suspense

• Suspense-a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety
  about the outcome of certain actions
• Example Jane Eyre-when she leaves to go to the
  new school

Alliteration

• Alliteration-repetition of the same consonant
  sound at the beginning of several words in close
  succesion
• Example James Thomsons verse- Comedragging
  the lazy languid line along

Dramatic Irony

• When words and actions of the characters of a
  work of literature have a different meaning for
  the readers than for the other characters
• Example Hawthornes Scarlet Letter-When Hester
  visits the governors garden to see to it that
  Pearl is not taken away from her she asks
  Reverend Dimmesdale to support her. The irony is
  that Reverend Dimmesdale and Hester and partners
  in sin.
