- When a reader has a similar experience or
background as a character, this helps him/her to
understand the character better.

- 1. Direct- when a writer directly states the
characters traits or characteristics.
13Example of DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION
- In Hamadi, when the author calls the women in
the school counselors office brittle.
14- 2. Indirect- when a writer depends on the reader
to draw conclusions about the characters traits.
Sometimes the writer tells what other people in
the story say and think about that character.
