Why physical activity is the focus for health
legacy
  • One life per year would be saved if 60 men over
    60 years old walked more
  • A 20 increase in cycling would save 107million
in reducing premature deaths and 52million
lowered NHS costs and 87million from work
    absence.
  • If 20 people at risk of diabetes changed their
lifestyle and became more active, one case of
diabetes will be prevented each year

New research increases our understanding of
opportunities for linking Games with physical
activity participation

Strategic objectives
  • Use the once in a lifetime opportunity for
hosting the Games as a catalyst for generating a
measurable and sustainable increase in physical
activity participation among Londoners up to and
    beyond 2012
  • Ensure that the increase in participation in
physical activity will contribute to narrowing
the gap in health inequalities by ensuring that
the entire system promotes physical activity
  • Ensure that the increase in physical activity
achieved is as common in the least active half of
the population as in the highest.
