Title: Can we build a better Environment

1
Can we build a better Environment?
Out-of-class Learning
  • Architecture The Environment

2
Where are we going?
Start of Yr7
End of Yr 9
3 4 5 6 7
If you can collect field data, graph your results
and make some good conclusions you can achieve
level 5 in this project..
3
Look carefully at the following buildings. In
your groups decide what you think each building
is used for...E.g. University, Office, Flats,
Concert Hall etc..

They are all Schools !
10
Why did the Government spend so much when it when
built these new schools?
What benefits do you think the government hoped
these new buildings would bring to the pupils who
study/learn in them?
11
Does our school provide a positive learning
environment?
Tidy
Stimulating
Safe
Interesting
Clean
Varied
Well maintained
Open
Friendly
Organised
  • What are the characteristics of a building that
    encourages learning?

12
TASK TWO
Before we can start our project we need to come
up with some hypotheses (this is a fancy word
Geographers use for predictions). Thinking about
the characteristics on the previous slide Which
part of our school do you think will score
highest? Which part of our school do you think
will score lowest? Explain your predictions.
e.g. Hypothesis One I think my Geography
classroom will score the highest because Mr Ward
always tries to keep it tidy and the displays on
the wall are bright, interesting, and colourful.
13
How can we measure the quality of our Environment?
14
In your group go to 8 locations around the school
(four inside and four outside). At each
location complete an environment quality survey.
Think carefully, you will have to visit and
score parts of the school which relate to your
hypotheses.
TASK THREE
i.e. if you felt the boys toilets would score
lowest you will have to visit this site to prove
for your prediction true or false.
15
Using your results produce a graph
Points Scored (Y Axis)
Hall
Annex B
Field
Canteen
Etc
The sites you visited go along the bottom (X Axis)
16
TASK FOUR
You now need to a conclusion.Look back at your
hypotheses. Compare your predictions with the
scores you actually gathered. Were you
correct? If any of your predictions proved
correct then these hypotheses can be
accepted. If any of your predictions proved
incorrect then these hypotheses have to be
rejected. If any of your hypotheses were
rejected try to offer a reason why. i.e. I
thought the quad would the score the lowest as it
is usually full of litter. However, as I scored
this site in the morning, not much rubbish had
been dropped.
17
TASK FIVE
How could we improve our school environment?
Imagine the school has been given 10000 to
invest in the buildings. What changes/improvements
would you make?Although 10000 sounds a lot of
money it is not enough to construct new
buildings, however, it is enough to improve some
of the buildings that already exist.
18
TASK SIX
Imagine a governors meeting has been called to
decide how the 10000 is to be spent.Produce a
speech outlining your proposed changes and
explaining your choice of alteration.A vote
will be held at the end of the meeting to decide
what changes are made.
