the anecdotes of mr. holder

I will never forget my first english class
in high school. When a foreigner walked into our
classroom, carrying a bad in his hand, we all
thought he must be someone who got lost in the
building. Unexpectedly, he locked the door, then
looked at us as if we were his quarry. hello,
everyone, he volunteered. I am your english
teacher this term. You can call me mr. holder.
11
Practice
it turned out that Mr. holder, a
spanish-american, came to china three years ago
after he graduated from college.

The rules in Mr. Holders class were very
interesting. If you were late, ok, sing an
english song for us but never an ABC song, he
would say. sing something new. If he asked you
how are you today? you would never say fine,
though it was surely the first reaction to this
question. say something new, or Ill shoot you.
Ill shoot you was his pet phrase, and he
said this always with a shooting pose.

  • Use a period (full stop) at the end of a complete
    sentence, however short it is.
  • Do not use a comma to join two coordinate
clauses use a comma and a conjunction, or a
    semicolon.
  • Make your commas different from your period. A
comma has a little tail(,) a period is a dot(.),
not a tiny circle(?), which is used in written
    Chinese.
  • Use the exclamation mark only after an emphatic
interjection or words that express very strong
    emotion. Do not overuse it.
  • Put a direct speech between quotation marks. The
subject and verb that introduce a quotation may
be put before, after, or in the middle of the
    quotation

16
  • She said," We have decided to take the
    examination.
  • We have decided to take the examination, she
    said.
  • We have decided, she said, to take the exam.
  • The quotation and she said are treated
as one sentence only the first word of the
    quotation has to be capitalized.

Work as if you were to live a hundred years, pray
as if you were to die tomorrow?

Eat to live, not live to eat.
You may delay, but time will not?
The sun will rise as usual tomorrow, my grandma
will never rise again, thats the way life is.

Ladder
  • To reach high, you can use a ladder. To achieve
a high aim in life, you must work hard---hard
work is often a ladder to success.
  • You should also see He who would climb the
ladder must begin at the bottom. Chinese people
have a proverb which is similar in meaning. It
says, A thousand-mile journey is started by
taking the first step. Both proverbs tell us
that the beginning of something should not be
taken lightly because it is small, for even the
    greatest work must start somewhere.

22
Well done is better than well said.
Up, sluggard, and waste not life in the grave
will be sleeping enough.
To err is human to repent divine to persist
devilish.
