3
What is VRS?
  • VRS is image enhancement technology providing
  • The best quality images to your system
  • With minimum effort,
  • Representing all the content of the original
  • With the smallest file size possible.
  • VRS is an agent...
  • Watching the status of the scanner (out of paper,
paper jam, connection, etc.) and guiding the end
user to resolve any hardware issues.
  • Checking image quality continuously.
  • VRS is transparent to the application and drops
seamlessly in Kofax, ISIS, and TWAIN applications
    without any integration effort.

4
Where is VRS located in the system ?
Scanner are connected with Adrenaline SCSI/Video
engines to a PC. Software VRS scanners also work
with Adaptec SCSI boards.
Scanners from BH, Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Kodak,
Panasonic, Ricoh,
Before images are passed to the scan application,
the VRS agent verifies image quality and hardware
status. With Software VRS scanners image
enhancements are applied in the PC.
Hardware VRS scanners include a special VRS
scanner board performing VRS image quality
enhancement processing.
Scan Applications built with the Kofax
ImageControls toolkit, ISIS toolkit or TWAIN
compliant applications all work with VRS. VRS is
not limited to Kofax applications. It works with
virtually any Scan application.
5
Where is the VRS technology located with Hardware
VRS?
  • VRS Accelerator Board inside the scanner performs
    ultra fast

Installing VRS Integrating VRS
8
Scanning 101
  • What is
  • A true color image?
  • A 24-bit color image?
  • A grayscale image?
  • A 256-level gray image?
  • An 8-bit gray image?
  • A binary image?
  • A black and white image?
  • A single or 1-bit image?

9
Thresholding
  • What is Thresholding?
  • The conversion of a multi-bit grayscale image
into a black and white image is called
    thresholding.
  • Why is it called Thresholding?

10
Basic Thresholding Compromising
  • This concept of simple thresholding results in a
    compromise.
  • Whatever threshold level, there is always some
    content sacrificed.
  • What we need is a thresholding technology that
preserves all the content of the original without
    compromises. VRS is that Technology

11
Introducing VRS Dynamic Edge Thresholding
12
Why is this a challenging original?

With VRS
Low Contrast Logo is still visible.
Dot Matrix Text is enhanced.
Highlighted text is readable.
Faint Handprint is automatically enhanced.
Coffee Cup Stain is not interfering with bar code
anymore.
Suppressed Background minimizes file size and
makes images internet ready.

15
VRS Key Benefit 1 !
VRS CAPTURES THE WIDEST SPECTRUM OF ORIGINALS
WITHOUT ANY ADJUSTMENTS, AND WITHOUT EVER
STOPPING THE SCANNER
16
VRS Key Benefit 2VRS Makes Scanning Easy
Production Scanning
  • Resume
  • Previous profession Burger Flipper at Bills
    Burger Palace
  • Age 25
  • Interests Rockroll and the next party
  • Technology skills Playstation, GameBoy Advance
  • Motivation to produce quality images Zero!
  • Currently looking for a new job
  • Your document capture system should automate the
scanning process as much as possible !

17
VRS Key Benefit 2VRS Makes Scanning Easy Ad
hoc/Remote Scanning
  • The scanner operator is an office manager or
secretary, and scans only a few documents per day
  • There is virtually no scanning support
  • The office has invested in a low cost scanners
with little or no image processing functionality
  • Once the image is transmitted to headquarters,
    rescanning becomes more difficult

18
Key Benefit 3VRS Produces Web-Ready Images
Color JPG - 150 DPI 212,992 bytes
200 dpi with regular scanner 135,087 bytes
200 dpi With VRS Only 47,578 bytes
  • VRS suppresses shaded and dark backgrounds. This
makes the text more readable and results in very
small file sizes perfect images to share over
    the web.
  • With a 45 Kbit modem connection, it would take
  • about 40 seconds to download the 150 dpi color
    image.
  • about 24 seconds to download the non VRS image.
  • about 9 seconds to download the VRS image !

19
How Well Will Group IV Compress These Images ?
Many transitions from black to white do not
compress well and even cause negative
compression.
Negative compression results in compressed
images that are larger than uncompressed images.
Large surfaces of white space compress well.
Large surfaces of black space compress well.
  • Background noise is the main cause of bad
    compression
  • VRS suppresses background noise and therefore
    image file size decreases

20
Key Benefit 4VRS Increases OCR Read Rate
  • Traditional deskew corrects the black white
image, resulting in jagged edges and artifacts.
  • VRS deskews the gray image first and then
converts it into a black white image.
  • VRS grayscale deskew produces crisper text.
  • Combined with VRS automatic text enhancement,
OCR forms processing systems produce up to 20
    less questionable characters !

21
Key Benefit 4VRS Increases OCR Read Rate
Edge Fusion
  • VRS Fuses the Edges of Broken Characters
  • Therefore OCR Engines Can Read These Characters
    Much More Accurately

22
Key Benefit 4VRS Increases OCR Read Rate
  • Using Adobe Acrobat and scanning in 200 dpi
  • The number of questionable words goes down by 60
    or more !

Without VRS 2.0 27 questionable words
With VRS 2.0 9 questionable words
23
Exception Processing
24
Key Benefit 5VRS Avoids Exception Processing
  • VRS corrects 99 of the images automatically and
warns the user if an image is out of range.
  • Adjustments of images can be done without a
physical rescan of the original !
  • ROI is less than a year on average and in many
cases only a matter of a few months

The earlier you trap the problem the better !
25
VRS Improves Efficiency at Every Step

36
VRS Tips and TricksPatterned Background
  • In general, the background density is adjusted
    with the brightness slider.
  • Sometimes what looks like a background color is
actually a pattern of lines, influenced by the
    contrast slider.

Background consists of pattern of lines
37
The VRS Noise Filters
  • These filters should only be used with documents
of the same kind. Never use them on batches of
    mixed originals!
  • Line Filter is excellent to make dot matrix text
    bolder
  • Speckle Removal Filter removes noisy backgrounds
  • Scan a Page
  • Right Click on the VRS Icon in the Windows Icon
    Tray and Select Preview
  • The VRS viewer and Interactive Interface appears
  • Select the Noise TAB

38
VRS Profiles
  • Use Profiles to load a set of VRS adjustments
    with a single click
  • Avoid changing the Default Settings profile,
    rather create new profiles
  • Scan a Page
  • Right Click on the VRS Icon in the Windows Icon
    Tray and Select Preview
  • The VRS viewer and Interactive Interface appears
  • Select the Profiles Tab

39
VRS Profiles
  • Profiles can be selected directly from the
    Windows Icon Tray
  • The Function key shortcuts only work when the
    interactive interface is active

40
How do I reset VRS to its Default values ?
  • In general, never change the Default Profile.
Always make new profiles and keep the Default
    Profile intact.
  • For VRS 3.x, re-install the software.
  • Or, install the Restore Default Values Utility

41
The VRS QC (Stop) Modes
  • On Errors (Default)
  • Opens the interactive interface when the
brightness of an image is out of range. Use this
mode when some of the originals are very dark.
  • First Page
  • Opens the interactive interface on the first page
of a batch and applies the settings of first page
to the rest of the documents in the batch. Use
this mode when switching batch jobs with very
    different document types regularly.
  • Every Page
  • Opens the interactive for every scanned document.
Only used for extremely challenging originals
    that require individual challenges
  • DISABLED (Advanced Users)
  • The interactive interface never shows up. Ideal
if VRS only adjusts a small amount and a small
percentage of images need to be adjusted.
  • Hardware Warnings (VRS 3.0 only)
  • Displays just the hardware warnings (Out of
Paper, Paper Jam, etc.) that may occur.
  • Right Click on the VRS Icon in the Windows Icon
    Tray and QC Mode
  • The VRS QC Mode selection menu opens
