Title: Improving your vocabulary

1
Improving your vocabulary
  • The following slides slowly show you derivatives
of a common base word. These words are found in
the Academic Word List a list of the most
common words needed to function well in an
    academic setting.
  • At the top of the presentation is a comment on
how the word is formed (the meanings of the
    roots, etc)
  • In the middle of the presentation are various
derivational changes. A noun will change its form
to become an adjective etc. As you click to
reveal more different forms, constantly ask
yourself the question are these forms in my
    active repertoire ?
  • Usually at the end of the presentation there is
an arrow, and then a word which adopts a similar
root, but is a completely different word with a
different meaning. So instead of going DEEP
(vertically) as you did with the derivatives -
inside the way a word can change, I invite you to
go FAR (horizontally) across many new, related
    words.
  • The idea here is that you let your mind
receptively input the words you see. Dont work
too hard. Just let the words enter your mind.
Listening to music while watching this
    presentation may help.
