R2000 History

• R2000 is a series of technical requirements for
  new home performance and construction.
• Began in the 1970s to develop comfortable homes
  for frigid Prairie winters
• Formalized in 1981, since then over 10000 R2000
  homes have been built
• Program is managed by Natural Resources Canada
• Construction and standards are periodically
  upgraded

Cost of R2000

• 40 more building requirements than standard
• building codes
• All R2000 houses must undergo special inspections
  and air quality testing
• All R2000 houses must be certified by the Federal
  government
• Approximately only 10-15 higher initial cost
