Title: Freewill vs' Determinism Slide 1

1
Freewill vs. Determinism Slide 1
  • Universal Determinism Every event has a cause
that fully determines it. Everything is
    PREDICTABLE.
  • Pierre Laplace (1749-1827) Laplaces Demon
  • Butterfly Effect small variations of the initial
condition of an object may produce large
    variations in the long term.
  • A butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in
the atmosphere that ultimately cause a tornado to
appear (or prevent a tornado from appearing). The
flapping wings represent a small change in the
initial condition of the atmosphere which leads
    to a tornado.

Freewill vs. Determinism Slide 2
  • Some evidence against universal determinism
  • The Creation of the Universe
  • Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle we can never
know the exact position and speed of a sub-atomic
    particle.
  • Indeterminism Some events are UNPREDICTABLE.

Freewill vs. Determinism Slide 3
  • Human Determinism all human actions are fully
determined by preceding eventssome of those
events are internal to the human, some are
    external.
  • Human Indeterminism at least some human actions
are not fully determined by preceding events.
  • Voluntary Actions characterized by a prior
decision process and the feeling that several
    different choices are available.

4
Freewill vs. Determinism Slide 4
  • Incompatibilism The concept that freewill and
    determinism cannot coexist.
  • Compatibilism The concept that freewill and
    determinism can coexist
  • Hard Determinism All human actions are
    determined.
  • Libertarianism (indeterminism) Humans have at
    least some freewill
