Wesleyan University Campus Master Plan
2
Taking the Measure of the Campus
Issues Concerns Observations History Natural
Systems Built Systems Regional Context Climate
Analysis Opportunities and Constraints Summary
3
Liberation through the Liberal Arts is our focus.
The point is to free people to make choices
through their lives that allow them to be
effective leaders.
4
We need the University Center, so the campus
truly has a center a heart.
5
We look a little shabby, our grounds could use a
lot of improvement every time you pull into an
area you face trash and curbs. We should put the
utilities on Wyllys and on High Street from
Loveland to Washington then we would have the
magnificent High Street that Mark Twain wrote
about.
6
Both sides of College Row are uninviting and
could be improved. We need more and better hang
out spaces. We need buildings and open space
that promote more and more collegiality.
7
Church street is a real barrier and contributes
to the campus feeling of separation - you can
spend your entire career in the Science tower.
8
We need to solve the issues surrounding the wood
frame houses.
9
There are too many cars on campus
10
There is a distinction between how it looks v.
how it feels
11
We need a coherent way of developing our campus
wide improvements and improving connections.

We dont want just to equip students with facts
but with ways of thinking about issues
courageously- to have enough chutzpah to think
that they can tackle what are totally
unforeseeable issues and deal with them in a
successful and humane way.
33
Meeting with Peter Patton
  • Our growth has been spasmodic
  • President Ted Etherington (_at_1966 1979) built
the arts, the science, the graduate programs
  • Next President was Colin Campbell 1980 to 1995)
Colin saved the place fiscally by adding students
which is where the wood frame houses came in.
Campbell oversaw Olin, and Freeman Athletic which
was finished at the end of the campaign for
    liberal learning which raised _at_65
  • Bill Chace came in and balanced the budget and
capped enrollments by instituting the University
Plan which was a financial plan. He started the
maintenance fund and wired the campus.
  • Doug (Wesleyan grad, class 0f 1955) came from
    Washington in 1995.
  • The intellectual culture here is unique in that
we expect the faculty to be committed scholars
and researchers throughout their career great
    teaching and great scholarship.
  • Our size is an advantage we can so more than
    some of our peers.
  • Many of our departments are twice as big as our
    peers.
  • We do not strive to have one department that is
better than another, rather we try to have
excellence with a more multi-disciplinary focus.
  • At the same time we seem a little less collegial
than some of our peers. For instance at Williams
there seems to be more camaraderie. Our
geography contributes to this lack of
    collegiality.
  • Faculty may sense this division more than the
    students

34
Meeting with Peter Patton
  • We have the traditional array of
    classes/courses, but our interdisciplinary
    courses are particularly good
  • Church street is a real barrier and contributes
to the campus feeling of separation
  • You can spend your entire career in the Science
    tower
  • We look a little shabby, our grounds could use a
    lot of improvement
  • We could make major improvements to how we access
    Olin
  • We should put the utilities on Willys and on High
Street from Loveland to Washington then we
would have the magnificent High Street that Mark
    Twain wrote about
  • We should orient our prime public space to the
    South
  • Both sides of College Row is uninviting and could
    be improved
  • We need more and better hang out spaces
  • We need buildings and open space that promote
    more and more collegiality
  • We need a solution for how we deal with our
neighborhoods people need to know when they are
    on the Wesleyan campus
  • We need to solve the issues o surrounding the
    wood frame houses
  • We will need to replace Hall-Atwater
  • The science tower is in serious need of
    rejuvenation

35
Meeting with Peter Patton
  • Davenport will be converted to academic space
  • We should regularize some of the housing on High
Street and think about other uses for them

36
Meeting with Barbara Jan Wilson
  • Been at Wesleyan 20 years, was in admissions and
    career planning
  • Immediate improvements get rid of the area
behind north college, think about better and more
attractive entrances, introduce some one way
street streets, plant some flowering trees and
    institute better landscaping better
  • Improve all the areas where the campus looks
shabby every time you pull into an area you
    face trash and curbs
  • We need the University Center, so the campus
truly has a center a heart
  • Our priorities are financial aid, faculty chairs,
    and then facilities
  • Low walls and landscaping at our edges would be
    better than gates
  • Even though, as a liberal arts college we believe
in change, people here dont like change
  • Improve William Street and the experience going
    to Atticus
  • We need to relocate parking lots to allow for
    growth and more beautification
  • We need more gateways into campus that say Im
entering a great University done with landscape
    and soft elements
  • We definitely need a new science building
  • We need to make better connection to the town and
    the river

37
Meeting with Judith and Billie
  • Wesleyan has a real vision of where they want to
head that resonated with me this is a vision of
an education for the 21st century which trains
our students holistically to make them effective
and ethical leaders in the world. I like the
intensity of this place intensity of both the
    faculty and the students
  • At Wesleyan the spirit of education and sharing
intellectual debate is pervasive campus wide we
like to have time to talk here
  • Our strategic plan (Wesleyan education for the
21st century) has truly informed our day to day
    decision making
  • We are a selective residential liberal arts
    college/university
  • Selective high performing student body
  • Residential students are her 24/7
  • Liberal Arts a diverse education with no
    requirements outside of the major

38
Meeting with Judith and Billie
  • Buildings that meet our strategic goals
  • Arts Center
  • Public affairs center
  • Many other spaces are too small for our current
    programs, i.e. Judd Hall
  • Other departments, i.e. English and Philosophy
are spread around too much ideally these should
be in the same building or at least close
    together
  • Language departments are split
  • The geography of the campus is L shaped with
Davenport as the elbow of the L
  • There is no place for faculty to gather on the
    campus
  • The science library needs a lot of help
  • The library has no connection to the field and
    field uses
  • Our overall signage needs to be greatly improved
  • We need to improve the back of College Row it
is the most heavily trafficked route on campus

39
Master plan Executive Committee
  • We need to fix and beautify all our back doors
    i.e. Davenport
  • Paths and drainage
  • Develop and attitude about the Long Lane project
one program element for Long Lane would be a
    living learning environment
  • Improvements to the connections to athletics
  • Improvements to the Cross Street

40
Meeting with Marcia Bromberg
  • We want to have a preliminary draft for our May
    board meeting
  • There a lot of little things we can do to the
    interior of spaces
  • We need a coherent way of doing our campus wide
    improvements
  • We need to look out to how we will be as a
University 20 to 30 years from now
  • We need to integrate the community into whats
    happening
