Jesus in the Gospel and the meaning of each of
these

3Introduction
- Throughout the Gospel Mark keeps Jesus identity
hidden, this is known as the Messianic Secret - The opening line of the Gospel reveal several
things that Mark believes about Jesus
4- This is the Good News about
- Jesus Christ, the Son of God
5Son of Man
- Son of Man ideal man
- The one predicted by the prophet Daniel in the
Old Testament, (who would have Divine authority) - and by Isaiah- (the suffering servant who would
die for the sins of humanity). - Jesus seems to identify with this servant, and
prefers to use the title Son of Man when speaking
of himself.
6- Paralysed Man Mk 2 v 1-12
- Some men lowered their friend through the roof
to Jesus. He told him his sins were forgiven
which made the teachers of the law angry. He told
the man to get up and walk and he did, the crowd
were amazed. Jesus shows the Son of Man has the
power to heal and forgive.
7The Request of James and John
- James and John asked Jesus if they could have
the right and left hand seats when Jesus comes to
reign in glory. He asks them if they are able to
drink from the same cup (of suffering) and be
baptised as he is. Others are angry with James
and John for making the request, Jesus reminds
them that greatness is about service. - "Whoever wants to be first must be the slave of
all, for even the Son of Man did not come to be
served but to serve and to give his life as a
ransom for many"
8Prediction of the Passion
Jesus predicts that the Son of Man will be
rejected by the elders, chief priests and
teachers of the law, he will be killed and three
days later rise from death. Peter rebukes Jesus
(he has left everything to follow him), Jesus
says "get behind me Satan". It would have been
very easy not to go through with this but he is
obedient, Jesus makes it very clear that those
who follow him will have to suffer too
9Saviour
- When Jesus was alive he saved people from
death/disease etc - Christians believe that Jesus was the Saviour
sent by God so that they could go to Heaven. When
he died on the cross he took all the sins of man
on himself so that those who believed in him
could go to Heaven
10The Calming of the Storm
- The disciples are in a boat and a storm comes up.
They are afraid but Jesus stands up, calms the
storm and says to them "Why are you afraid? Don't
you have any faith?". They go from being scared
of the weather to being amazed at God's power
shown in Jesus.
11The feeding of the 5000
- People followed Jesus to hear him speak, because
they were far away from towns they became hungry.
Jesus told the disciples to bring all the food
they could find, they brought 5 loaves and 2
fish. The people sat down in groups of 50 and
100. Jesus said a prayer saying thanks for the
food. There was enough food to feed everyone with
12 baskets left over.
12The Syro-Phoenician woman's daughter
- A Gentile (non Jew) comes to Jesus and asks him
to heal her daughter. Jesus tests her by
suggesting that the children (Jews) should have
food (Jesus' teaching/miracles) before the dogs
(Gentiles). The woman responds with faith saying
that the dogs should have the crumbs left from
the children. Jesus rewards her faith by healing
her daughter.
13Christ/ Messiah/ Son of David
- The Jews believed that God would send them a
Messiah, a descendant of the great king David,
whose rule would never end. He would deliver the
Jews from oppression, and Gods kingdom would be
established on earth - Many believed this would be a political/warrior
type figure
14Caesarea Philippi
- Jesus and his disciples entered Caesarea
Philippi. He asked Peter who people said he was.
Peter answered that people said he was a prophet,
e.g.. Elijah. Jesus asked who Peter thought he
was, Peter said he was the Christ. - Jesus did not want anyone to know who he was
until they realised the Messiah was not a warrior
king
15Blind Bartimaeus
- A blind man sitting by the side of the road
called out to Jesus as he passed by, calling him
"Son of David". Jesus called him to him and
healed him saying "your faith has healed you".
Some believe this was a physical healing, others
believe the sight he was given was an
understanding of who Jesus was.
16Entry to Jerusalem
- When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on what is now
known as Palm Sunday he rode on a donkey, not the
animal expected of a mighty warrior.
He was showing the people he was coming in peace
and that their Messiah was going to have to die.
The people called out "hosanna" meaning "save us"
and called him "Son of David".
17Son of God
- Person closest to God
- Christians believe Jesus is God in flesh
meaning that they can learn about Gods character
and will by looking at Jesus life
18Baptism
- Jesus goes to John the Baptist and asks to be
baptised - As he emerged from the water the Holy Spirit
appeared overhead as a dove and the voice of God
came from heaven saying You are my own dear Son,
I am pleased with you
19The Transfiguration
- Jesus took his closest disciples with him onto a
hill where he was transformed - His clothes became bright white and the figures
of Elijah (greatest prophet) and Moses (law
giver) appeared - Peter offered to put up tents for each of them
- A voice from heaven said this is my own dear
son, listen to him
20Jesus before the council
- When Jesus is arrested he is taken to the High
Priests house - The High priest asked him are you the Messiah,
the Son of the blessed God? - Jesus replied I am
- This crime of blasphemy was what Jesus was put to
death for
