1, 2009-January 31, 2010 For fieldwork
conducted in Spanish- or Portuguese-Speaking
Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain or Portugal.
2WHAT THE AWARD COVERS
- Roundtrip airfare to and from the
- host country
- In-country transportation (bus, taxi,
- car rental)
- Up to 25 of the total funds awarded
- may be used for per diem expenses
- (housing and meals)
3WHO MAY APPLY
- UNM graduate students
- (M.A. or early, pre-dissertation Ph.D.)
- Across disciplines
- Anyone who meets the above
- criteria AND whose research relates
- in some way to the human population
- of the selected research country.
4RESEARCH CRITERIA
- Location Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking
- country of Latin America, the Caribbean,
- or Iberia excluded are French and
English-speaking countries - (Belize, Haiti, Guyana, Surinam, Fresh Guiana),
Puerto Rico, and - the U.S./Mexico borderlands.
- Timeframe Short projects, generally 2-16
- weeks.
- Project Must be related to topics
- concerning the human population of the
- location you choose must result in a paper,
- article, Masters thesis, or some other
- UNM requirement.

7RESEARCH PROPOSAL
- Examples of awarded FRG research proposals are

- Format maximum four pages, double-spaced, one-
- inch margins, twelve point typeface. Citations
part of - page length. Appendices are permitted but not
encouraged. - Meet with your project advisor to discuss the
goals - of your research project he or she can help
iron - out objectives, requirements, and suggest
preliminary - research/sources you must be working in
conjunction - with a UNM faculty member from your department,
- even if research is related to an independent
study or thesis

- Introduction Purpose, focus and objectives of
research - Methodology Archives and libraries, participant
- observation, surveys, interviews, etc. (if
applicable, - include survey questions or similar
methodological - instruments as appendix).
- Discipline How will the research further the
discipline - Academics How does the project fit with academic
goals? - Conclusion What will you do with the information
- gathered? publish, present, use for thesis?
9LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
- In the letter of recommendation, faculty
- will often discuss
- Why you are a strong candidate for the grant
- Your performance in and work from a
- previous class of theirs
- How the project will help you advance
- academically and
- How the project will support your future career
goals. - Request your recommendation letter early!
10TRANSCRIPTS
- You must include copies of graduate transcripts.
- UNM transcripts may be unofficial printouts.
11BUDGET
- Your budget should include the following
- how you plan to fund the research project,
- including the specific funding you
- have requested from the LAII, SRAC, RPT,
- Department, as well as the personal funds
- you intend to us.

- airfare costs (e.g. Orbitz, Travelocity, etc).

12ITINERARY
- Your itinerary should detail each phase of your
- research project. Many researchers will separate
- their work into approximately five phases
- Phase I Preliminary Research Phase II and III
- Collaborate with organization or individuals
Phase IV - Travel to alternate research location Phase V
Post- - Research Procedures.
- Each phase should include the following
information - location, dates, description of research
activity, - informants/advisors, etc.).

- The LAII stipulates that all FRG applicants
- must apply for at least one supplemental grant,
- specifically either the SRAC grant or the RPT
grant. - You must receive LAII approval if you do not
intend to - apply for either the SRAC or RPT.
- While the LAII does not require that you OBTAIN
- funding from these supplemental grants, you are
required to - submit proof of application (i.e. include a
time/date stamped - copy of either the SRAC or RPT application cover
page) along - with your FRG application.

15IRB or IACUC COVER PAGE
- All FRG applicants must include in their
application - packets proof that they have submitted their
research - for either IRB or IACUC approval. This proof
comes - in the form of a copy of the time and date
stamped cover - Page of either the IRB or IACUC application that
you - will submit as part of your FRG application
packet. - Though approval is not required at the time of
FRG - application, all researchers must obtain and
provide - proof of either approval or exemption from the
IRB - or IACUC before they commence travel for their
- research. This proof comes in the form of a copy
of - the approved or exempted application cover page
that - you must submit to the LAII before your departure.
16INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD
- The IRB oversees all social, behavioral and
education - research involving human subjects.

- RECOMMENDED
- BEGIN EARLY!!! The IRB review process
- takes time.
- Begin the IRB on-line training as soon as
possible - in the IRB review process, and encourage your
faculty - advisor to ascertain if his or her training
certification - is still valid (certification can expire).
- Work with your faculty advisor to compose the IRB
- application and continue to work with him or her
throughout - the review process.
- Consider applying for an expedited IRB review.
18INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE
- The IACUC oversees all instances of animal
- use by UNM community members regardless
- if research is conducted on- or off-campus.

- RECOMMENDED Applicants should submit
- their application for IACUC approval to the IACUC
- 21 days prior to the IACUCs scheduled monthly
- committee meeting. The committee schedule for

19RESUME or CURRICULUM VITAE
- You are REQUIRED to submit your résumé or CV it
is your - personal preference that will decide which one to
submit. There - is no standard format required for either.
LETTERS OF SUPPORT
- You are ENCOURAGED to submit letters of support
from - in-country contacts. The overseeing committee
greatly - appreciates applicants who provide proof of
established, - supportive contacts. Either formal letterhead or
informal email - printouts will serve. When letters are sent
directly to the LAII, - please have them addressed to the LAII Grants
Awards - Committee, c/o Keira Philipp-Schnurer.
20POST RESEARCH PROCEDURE
- If awarded an FRG, upon return to Albuquerque
- (within 14 days of return) you are required to
- submit the following documentation to the LAII

- FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION

- Receipts original copies of all of your
receipts relevant to - your FRG funding (airfare, in-country travel,
and per diem costs if applicable). - An organized, typed list of these receipts
divided into - categories of use (airfare, meals, lodging,
etc). This list should itemize each receipt and
provide the following information date,
description of purchase, amount, exchange rate,
and approximate US dollar conversion. - (an example of the format suggested for
- this financial documentation will soon be posted
online)

- RESEARCH REPORT a typed, maximum-four-page
- summary of your research that details the
following - Brief reiteration of the purpose of the trip and
any - previous research experience.
- Activities undertaken and objectives accomplished
- while abroad.
- Description of any previous field research or
- international experiences.
- Recommendations for others conducting similar
field research. - Uses to which the results of the research project
will be applied.
23DEADLINE
Completed FRG applications are due MONDAY, OCTOBE
R 12, 2009 by 500PM in the LAII MAIN OFFICE
If you are unable to submit a COMPLETE
application packet by the deadline date, you
must contact Keira Philipp-Schnurer as soon as
possible to explain why and to approve/coordinate
the submission of late materials.
