Title: Sowing Seeds

1
Sowing Seeds
2
  • Different size seeds need to be sown using
    different methods

3
Instructions for sowing seeds
  • How seeds are sown depends on their size
  • Seed packets give instructions about the spacing
    of seeds when planting them
  • You need to know how to sow
  • Large seeds
  • Small seeds
  • Pelleted seeds

4
Sowing large seeds
  • Seeds must not be sown too close together
  • Large seeds (e.g. acorns, sweet pea, beans) can
be sown individually, spaced out by hand

5
These acorns are large enough to be sown by hand
6
Intermediate size seeds
  • Sown directly from packet
  • or by taking a pinch between the thumb and
forefinger and scattering them over the surface
    of the compost
  • E.g. Asters

7
Sown small seeds
  • mixed with silver sand and then sown, to stop
    them becoming too crowded
  • The silver sand dilutes the seeds so that they
    can be spread more thinly
  • Seeds would fight for
  • Water
  • Light
  • Root-space
  • e.g. Begonia

Pelleted seeds
  • Some small seeds can be coated in small ball of
    clay
  • Seeds coated like this are called pelleted
    seeds
  • Fertiliser can be included in the coating, to
give the seeds extra nutrients (food)
  • This makes them easier to handle, prevent them
sticking together and therefore space out
  • Take longer to germinate than non-pelleted seeds
    and require more water

Pre-Germinating (Chitting) Seeds
  • Chitting involves treating seeds so that they
    will germinate quicker
  • Seeds that have a very tough outer coat fail to
germinate until water from the soil gets in
  • To speed up germination, the seeds are cracked or
a small cut is made in the outer coat to allow
    water to enter
  • Sometimes part of the hard coat is removed using
    a fine abrasive sand paper
