  • The world of information is constantly changing
    and expanding. Each year more books are
    published, more articles appear in journals or
    newspapers, new CD ROMs and DVDs are produced,
    and more resources become available to us through
    computers through databases, online services, and
    the Internet.

  • The growth and expansion of technology constantly
    creates new ways for information to be preserved
    and new ways for people to access information
    whether its through your home computer, in
    libraries, in businesses or research institution,
    and now through cell phones.

  • All of this stored information can be massive and
    overwhelming. We need trained information
    professionals to help us organize and store the
    information first, and then to provide guidance
    and assistance to retrieve and understand it.

  • Information services is extremely comprehensive
    and it combines aspects of library and
    information science. These professionals must be
    trained to organize, analyze, preserve, retrieve,
    and access the vast amount of information out
    there today.

  • Information professionals work in a wide variety
    of organizations, from libraries to schools to
    businesses to government research institutes.
  • Lets explore a couple different types of
    libraries and positions where a history degree
    would be relevant.

  • College and university librarians work in
    libraries suited to the research needs of the
    students and faculty.

  • Libraries at this level usually have large staffs
    of librarians who work in a number of
    specializations.

  • Archivists, like librarians, deal primarily with
    written or printed material, but copies of the
    items they store are either unique or few in
    number.
  • Archivists maintain records in accordance with
    accepted standards and practices that ensure the
    long-term preservation and easy retrieval of the
    documents. Records may be saved on any medium,
    including paper, film, videotape, audiotape,
    electronic disk, or computer.

  • Archivists also may work with specialized forms
    of records, such as manuscripts, electronic
    records, photographs, cartographic records,
    motion pictures, and sound recordings.

    masters degree in library science.
    Administrators generally have a doctoral degree
    but it is not always required.
  • Librarians who work in large university libraries
    are sometimes required to have a second masters
    degree in a specific subject field.

    many government positions. The Smithsonian
    Institution, the National Archives, state

    other government-managed cultural institutions
    employ historians, archivists, curators, and
    individuals with training in historic
    preservation.

  • Curators administer the affairs of museums,
    aquariums, botanical gardens, nature centers, and
    historic sites.

  • Curators direct the acquisition, storage, and
    exhibition of collections, including negotiating
    and authorizing the purchase, sale, exchange, or
    loan of collections. They are also responsible
    for authenticating, evaluating, and categorizing
    the specimens in a collection.

    up to the employer. Most look for a masters
    degree in library science combined with a strong
    background or advanced degree in a specific field.

    traditional library skills are often the center
    of this blend, with the focus on project
    management

    Coordinator, Digitization Librarian, and Digital

    on experience, qualifications, location, and
    library or company.
