The Unique Way of Organizing Teacher Training in
Finland

• Every university organizing teacher education has
  a teacher training school.
• There are 13 teacher training schools, which are
  administratively part of the faculties of
  education.
• The quality of supervision in teacher training
  schools is considered to be as particularly high.
• The functional connection between teacher
  training schools, departments of education and
  other university departments
• Applying educational and didactic theory and
  know-how in practice
• Evaluation of teaching practice and supervision
• Schools operations are governed and financed by
  the Ministry of Education.

Teaching

• Teacher training schools provide teaching for
  comprehensive and upper secondary levels.
• The size of the teacher training schools vary
  from primary level to schools providing teaching
  from pre-school to upper secondary level.
• The number of pupils and students in all of the
  teacher training schools is 8000.
• The number of student teachers practising every
  year is 3000.
• The number of teaching staff altogether is 800.

Upper secondary education

• Approximately 92 of those who completed basic
  education in 2003 continued directly to general
  or vocational upper secondary school.
• Completion of upper secondary education is
  considered to be the minimum requirement for
  performance in working life and lifelong
  learning.

After senior high school studies

• Student takes national matriculation exams at
  least in four subjects
• After taking matriculation exams one is qualified
  to continue studies at the university level if
  one passes the admission tests of the university

• Goals Teacher trainee orientates to the school

• trainee gets to know the pupils in junior high
  school and also
• to the teachers work. The trainee finds out the
  diversity
• of the teachers occupation.

• discusses about the observations with the
  supervisor teacher

• Goals The teacher trainee gets the basic skills
  in the
• curriculum work, planning the teaching, teaching
  and
• evaluation. The trainee gets the facilities to
  meet
• different kinds of pupils in classroom work.

• plans and carries out the classroom lessons
• evaluates both ones own and pupils work

Advanced practise 1 (6 credits)

• Goals The teacher trainee takes more
  independent
• responsibility of the teachers work. The trainee
  gets to know more
• about the cooperation between parents and school.

• observates and analyses classroom situations
• studies the didactics of the subject(s)
• practises the computer based teaching
• gets more information about the cooperation with

• active role of teachers work as a whole. The
  trainee goes into
• details of teachers occupation in school and
  gets to know
• more about the students welfare system in
  school.

• The trainee

  course in junior
• or senior high school
• takes independent responsibility in teaching and
  other
• duties that take place in teaching the course
