Lacey Act 1900

• It was proposed by Iowa Rep. John F. Lacey
• It was signed into law by President William
  McKinley on May 25th, 1900
• The Lacey Act has been amended several times and
  the most significant amendments were in 1969,
  1981, and in 1989.
• National but with increasing activity with
  international trafficking.

Functions

• Originally directed towards the preservation of
  game and wild birds. But was later extended to
  protect other species as well.
• The Lacey law prohibited the transportation of
  illegally captured/ prohibited animals across
  state lines.
• It was the first federal law protecting wildlife,
  and it is still in effect.
• The Lacey Act is administered by the Departments
  of the Interior, Commerce, and Agriculture
  through their respective agencies.
