  • Important Information for Clubs

What is a School Club Link?
  • A partnership between a school and a community
    sports club that meets the aims of both parties
  • Helping young people from sport in school to
    sport in clubs and the wider community.
  • School Club links is one of the key strands to
    the Government PESSYP strategy (explained on next
    slide)
  • A good school club link will increase
    participation in sport for children and young
    people and count towards the 5 hour offer
    (explained later)

  • Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young
    People
  • Used to be known as PESSCL (PE, School Sport
    Club Links)
  • Government Strategy for increasing participation
    and opportunities in sport for children and young
    people
  • Links School PE and Community Sport to ensure all
    children and young people have access to the 5
    hour offer

How do you establish a School Club Link?
  • Identify a school (close to the club is ideal if
    possible)
  • Make contact with the school
  • PLT or Headteacher (PDM or SDOs can help)
  • A personal contact or member of your club
  • As a club identify what you are able to offer
    be realistic
  • Consider target age groups/gender etc
  • Have an initial meeting
  • Work with the school to start the school-club
    link ball rolling whatever your plan, it must
    work for both parties

What constitutes a good School-Club Link?
  • Coaching in a school setting by the club
  • Curriculum
  • After School/ Lunchtimes or even Breakfast Clubs
  • Club providing festivals or competitions (at
    school or club)
  • Working with teachers to mentor them on a
    specific sport
  • Talks in classes or assemblies
  • Providing the school and pupils with club
    information
  • Posters or Websites
  • POSTERS ALONE DO NOT PROVIDE A SCHOOL CLUB LINK

  • Club coaches are volunteers and work during the
    day
  • Unable to offer sessions consecutively
  • Not sure who to contact at the school
  • Your sport is difficult or unable to be taken
    into a school setting
  • Your sport and/or coaches are unable to deliver
    to a full class of 30
  • Cost
  • You are a full capacity within your club

What you need to be aware of?
  • CRB checks schools should be asking
  • By law, they only have to take the CRB number,
    not a copy
  • You should be CRB checked by your NGB if you are
    a coach
  • Levels of coaching qualifications
  • Level 1 Assistant coach can support a
    teacher, but the teacher must be present
    throughout
  • Level 2 Coach can coach unsupported
  • The class is always the responsibility of the
    teacher

  • Coach to pupil ratios school over rides NGB????

Derbyshire Coachmark
  • A national pilot, led by Derbyshire Sport
  • Currently in High Peak it is paid coaches who are
    working towards it
  • Aim to ensure high quality coaching in education
    setting
  • Coaches will be assessed by trained assessors
  • Long term aim to involve clubs in the scheme
  • Schools will (or should) be aware of the scheme
    and may ask questions

Recommendations
  • Have a written agreement in place
  • Keep qualifications and/or copies in one central
    place
  • Do not agree to something unachievable
  • Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop
  • Equity in your coaching or similar course
  • Initial meeting ages, numbers, abilities,
    special needs, space available, teachers present
    etc.
  • Avoid exceeding your NGB ratios consider your
    insurance
  • Make PDM and/or local SDO and NGB officer aware
    of your club link may help with funding
