Rifle Drill
In this lesson Revise Drill previously
taught Grounding and taking up Arms Changing Arms
on the March Fixing and Unfixing Bayonets

Grounding and taking up Arms
On the command Ground ... ARMS
Turn Rifle 45 to right with an all round grip on
the weapon, at the same time take a marching pace
forward with the left foot.
Immediately Bend forward on left knee, head up,
place rifle on ground, magazine to right, weapon
parallel to right foot, right hand in line with
right knee.
In order to be positioned right you will need to
pull the weapon back slightly.
After a pause of 2 marching paces Return smartly
to attention.

Grounding and taking up Arms
On the command Take up... ARMS
Take a marching pace forward and bend forward on
right knee, head up, grasp rifle with right hand
at lower band,
left hand remains vertical up and down the left
side.
After a pause of 2 marching paces Return smartly
to order.
Care must be taken not to drag weapon along the
ground.

Changing Arms on the March
On the command Change ... ARMS
The weapon is forced to the front of the body
with the carrying hand. It is met by the other
hand which takes an all round grip of the weapon
directly above the magazine.
Care must be taken to keep elbows in and maintain
control of the weapon.
....after 2 marching paces.....
Release the grip of the rifle with the carrying
hand then immediately seize rifle with an all
round grip directly above the other hand.

....after 2 marching paces.....
Force the rifle across onto the opposite shoulder
under control. At the same time releasing the
grip on the rifle of the receiving arm.
The forearm of the other arm should be across the
body and parallel to the ground.
Once into the shoulder the carrying hand should
locate the trigger guard to resume the correct
grip for shoulder arms.
....after 2 marching paces.....
Force the new non carrying arm across the body
and lock into the side for two further marching
paces before swinging it correctly for the march.

Fixing and Unfixing Bayonets
On the command Squad will fix bayonets, squad
... FIX
Rifle is forced out to the full extent of the
right arm. Left grasps bayonet handle and turns
Bayonet vertical up the centre of back.
Care should be taken not to move the body during
this movement.
One the command Squad ... BAYONETS
Turn and drop head to look at the muzzle. With
the left hand withdraw Bayonet with a sharp
downwards motion and fix onto weapon at the last
moment.
You have 5 marching paces to carry out this
movement

Fixing and Unfixing Bayonets continued
On the command Squad ... ATTENTION
Return to Attention position.
On the command Squad will unfix bayonets,
squad un ... FIX
With right hand lift and place butt between feet
grasping the weapon between slightly bent knees
and the left hand grasps the weapon at the top of
the stock.
....after 2 marching paces.....
The right hand releases the weapon and grasps the
bayonet standard depressing the plunger to
release the bayonet.

Fixing and Unfixing Bayonets
On the command Squad ... BAYONETS
The scabbard is forced forward at and angle of 45
with the left hand whilst the right hand carrys
the bayonet to scabbard.
The body is turned to look down the scabbard.
The bayonet is forced home on the timing of the
5th marching pace.
On the command Squad ... ATTENTION
The right hand is brought over the body and
grasps the weapon at the upper band.
....after 2 marching paces.....
The weapon is lifted over the right boot, the
body is turned and the position of attention is
resumed.
