6Theme
The theme of the whole book is Civilisation vs
Savagery. This is emphasised in this chapter by
Jack being the savage one wanting to go and hunt
for the beast automatically and not thinking
things through, and Ralph being the civilised
one, wanting to plan their actions before they
leave. Thisll be a real hunt! Wholl
come? Ralph moved impatiently. The spears are
made of wood. Dont be silly. Jack sneered at
him. Frightened? Course Im frightened. Who
wouldnt be?
7Reader Response
The reader felt that the boys were changing, you
could see a difference in Jack, wanting to hunt
and kill, when at the start he was too
frightened. And could see that Jack was starting
to dislike Ralph and could tell that something
was going to happen between them and their
conflict.
