Title: OUTER PLANETS

1
OUTER PLANETS
Jupiter
  • Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the
universe. It was first visited in 1973. It is 90
    hydrogen and 10 helium.
  • Jupiters storms are caused by its internal
heat. It has a ring but much fader than Saturn's.
It has 16 known moons but probably has around 60.
The great red spot seen on Jupiter is the mark
left by a storm that lasted around one million
    years.

2
Saturn
  • Saturn has such a low density that it would float
in water. It is about 75 hydrogen and 25
helium. Saturn's ring is made up of lots of small
rings. Saturns rings are 250,000 kilometres in
diameter and 1.5 kilometres wide. At night time
you can see Saturn without a telescope.

3
Uranus
  • Uranus is the first planet discovered in modern
times. There is an ongoing battle over which of
Uranus poles is its north pole! It has its spin
axis almost in the plane of its orbit about the
sun. This produces unusual seasons. Some English
people call Uranus Herschel because the man who
discovered Uranus was called William Herschel.

4
Neptune
Neptune is the king of the sea. It is the eighth
planet from the Sun and is also known as the Blue
Giant. Neptune winds are the fastest in the solar
system, reaching 2000 km/hour. Neptune's most
prominent feature is the Great Dark Spot in the
southern hemisphere. It is about the same
diameter as Earth.
5
Pluto
  • The surface temperature on Pluto varies between
    about -235 and -210 C . Pluto's composition is
unknown, but its probably a mixture of 70 rock
and 30 water ice. Pluto is the only planet that
has not been visited by a spacecraft . Pluto was
discovered in 1930 by a fortunate accident.
Calculations which later turned out to be an
error had predicted a planet beyond Neptune,
based on the motions of Uranus and Neptune.
